bad input sound on Pi 2 with Scarlett 2i2

Posted this question also on the Raspberry Pi forum:
Hi,

I am using the Pi model 2 headless with Csound and a USB sound setup.
Had no problem with a cheap C-Media USB card, but with my Scarlett 2i2 the input sound is terrible (noisy, weak etc)
I must say I do not use a powered USB hub, but I do have a 2A power supply and even a small midi keyboard attached via USB. The problem also exists if I disconnect the midi device.
Output sound is no problem here!
Only when I use input, like
CODE: SELECT ALL
arecord | aplay |

I get the very bad sound.
Tried all available tricks (I think), but no luck yet.

Any ideas?
Richard

Are you using Pulseaudio or Jack or something else?

I am only using alsa at the moment...
Tried jack2, but could not get the proper device name for my Focusrite Scarlett.

Have you tried editing /etc/pulse/default.pa ?

enabling snd-usb-audio or disable module-suspend-on-idle

I'm just throwing out ideas. Usually for me when using jack, if it doesnt work for pulseaudio it wont work for jack, jack-sink module helps too sometimes. And if using ALSA in csound, sometimes I need to choose input device as well to stop crackling, usually combining analog input and digital output resaults in crackling sound via ALSA.

Thanks, I might give that a try, but I understood that PA is an abstraction layer on top of ALSA, so I'm not sure if that would improve things...

Yes, sorry if jack doesn't detect the device. Then it's a deeper problem that I've never encountered. I once had problem with alsa detecting my hdmi audio. All I had to do was to edit the grub configurations and blacklist intel and add amd drivers. But there's 0% chances that grub is wrongly configured on raspi natively. But if it works fine with alsa then your system should be detecting your usb audio device. Also PA is abstraction on alsa, but from my experience broken pulseaudio equals to broken jack, I just had that experience recently. You can surely do pulseaudio -k and run jack, but if pulseaudio is screwing up with alsa configuration, then killing it has no effect.

Just a thought,
you could also test the Scarlett card on another system just to make
sure the audio input of the hardware is ok
