Dear Istvan, I would like to make a formal request that Istvan Varga accept my sincere public apology for the language I used in public emails sent to the developer's list recently and continue making his invaluable contributions to Csound. To that end, I would be happy to withdraw my request for more UDO arguments (although that would be cool and helpful) Rather, I would merely request that Istvan - reconsider his decision to stop developing Csound and bring his heart, soul, spirit, and brilliance back to the developer community - the feature we need in Csound5 is THE dedicated developer - Istvan Varga. So this is my request for Csound5 - Istvan Varga. It is my sincere hope that he would realize (as a result of this exchange on the developer's list) that even *hackish* code he doesn't like or of which he is not particularly proud - such as his awesome UDO's - might just turn out to be essential tools to others - so much so that users, teachers, and fans, (like me), are sometimes passionate (beyond our good judgement) about wanting to see them expanded and improved and say things that we wish we would not have said... such as - cut the !@#$ing !@#$ Istvan, your many contributions to this community are significant and extremely important - both in the code department and moreover, when you are helping beginners realize how certain opcodes function - i respect and value your teaching immensely. I hope that you will accept my apology and reconsider Sincerely, Dr. B. PS: A little late now, but yesterday I purchased the following book: *30 Days to Taming Your Tongue by Deborah Smith Pegues* I'll let you all know how well it worked for me - 30 days from now. ------------------------------------------------------- Using Tomcat but need to do more? I am going to chime in ( yet again ) with the plea to have everyone read: Producing Open Source Software - Karl Vogel. I've said this a number of times, but I get the impression that very few people realize just how much better off we would be if all developers lived by the guidelines in this book. Karl has seen far more complicated action than we experience here and has invaluable wisdom on the technical, personal, and manegerial side of the open source model. He was one of the chief developers of CVS and now of Subversion. He knows his stuff. Can you summarise some of the important points for us lazy gits who don't read books? Victor Lazzarini wrote: > Can you summarise some of the important points for > us lazy gits who don't read books? There's a lot in there. But thesis I guess is that the best way to collaborate on open source projects requires all parties, new and old developers, project managers, etc, to understand how "the right to fork" fundamentally changes the best way to manage technical and personal issues. This changes how a projects "institution" can or can't control things, and also how individual developers must regard their contributions. The book also discusses a lot about how an open source projects biggest asset is its developers, and that in successful projects, attracting and keeping developers ( and keeping people working together well ) is *more* important than anything else, including techical merits in the short run. Good read. Lots more in there I'm forgetting. Iain ------------------------------------------------------- Using Tomcat but need to do more? Need to support web services, security?
