Subject[Csnd] Lacking csound simple/intermediate compositions and .csd files/code to learn
Hello all,
as a composer that began to compose to the piano, the models have been "Little preludes and fugues", "Inventions for 2 and 3 voices", "Well tempered clavier" all by Bach, together with some of the piano sonatas of Mozart.
In one sentence, there is a graduality from simple to complex, when beginning to compose.
Nothing like this can be found in http://csound.com/
The links in http://csound.com/listen.html
do no contain any .csd files or even any hint about how the music were composed.
The result is that every beginner remains without any model and with the feeling "I will never get there" and abandone csound.
This should be repaired with (not less than 40) links to compositions and their .csd files,  in all levels. From the most simple to the most complex.

That link  ***MUST*** be in csound.com
I don't dare to ask this to Richard Boulanger (probably will not even consider my question). If you or any known user/developer ask him, probably will be succesfull.

Speaking of which, a lot of students find it very confusing that there are 2 websites, and that csounds.com appear higher in the serach ranking, so they will find it first.
Then it is not the most updated one..., goes for both downloads and for the manual. Dr B.? Perhaps it would be possible to find a solution to this?

The mysteries of search engine optimization... the ideal thing from
our point of view would be if csounds.com simply redirected to
csound.com, but I doubt Richard Boulanger would agree to that.

The next best thing would be if csounds.com had a prominent link to
csound.com. Wait... it does!

So I don't think there is much to do here.

Mike

The other way round: csound.com above csounds.com. That’s what we need,

The point of my message is missing in all the responses (with the exception of Michael Gogins). I'll try to be more clear:
There is ***NOT*** links to music composed with csound and their .csd files. (not in csound.com and not in www.csounds.com

This should be repaired with (not less than 40) links to compositions and their .csd files,  in all levels. From the most simple to the most complex.
People (teachers) capable to repair this (if I guess right) are: Joachim Heintz, Oveynd Brandtseg, Victor Lazzarini, Richard Boulanger, Tarmo Joahnnes,.... others...(?)
The link given by Michale Gogins (http://csound-showcase.com. ) contains compositions that there are not beginner level and not intermediate level (with the exception perhaps of "Blue Cube").
The full original message is here below.

AttachmentsOutlook-1504699752.png

I have been revisiting C Sound and have found some of the examples useful but I feel as if they're missing basic building blocks eg a .csd playing a sample and adding a variety of processes such as panning and filtering. Also a bit more sense of how the P Fields work would be good. I am not a computing person (though I cut my teeth a long time ago on MUSIC 11 at Durham) and I sometimes find the instructions/explanations obscure.

Mostly the examples were for me a bit hard to fathom. I do realise this is a complex language and that its flexibility requires it to be broad.

SubjectRe: [Csnd] Lacking csound simple/intermediate compositions and .csd files/code to learn
I know this is unrelated to the original question, but the slack is an ideal platform for beginner (and advanced) questions, in the same manner as the mailing list. Encourage more people to join and discuss all levels of csound.

The purposes of the Csound Showcase, in no particular order of importance, are:

-- To show some pieces of GOOD MUSIC made with Csound that play in the
browser so you can both listen to them, and see the code that made
them.
-- To show pieces AT ALL LEVELS OF DIFFICULTY from beginner to
advanced that play in the browser so you can both listen to them, and
see the code that made them.
-- To show pieces that demonstrate particular techniques of musical
composition, Csound instrument design, and user interface design.
-- To allow the visitor to modify existing pieces AT ALL LEVELS and
hear the results right away. If that visitor belongs to the site, the
modified piece can be posted back for others to see and share also.

SubjectRe: [Csnd] Lacking csound simple/intermediate compositions and .csd files/code to learn
The Csound FLOSS Manual might be the closest thing we have to a tutorial. Although it doesn't contain musical pieces, but examples about the syntax of the language and the implementation of processing and synthesis techniques. I have personally been concerned about the separation of both of those things in different chapters because it may happen that people with no programming background lose hope before getting to the synthesis and processing part of the manual.

I'm currently working on an online tutorial (in Spanish first) that hopefully will try to intertwine both aspects, but I will definitely not be dealing with the aesthetics of musical pieces so maybe the Showcase is a better place for something like that.

Cheers.

These .orc. and .sco files  ***MUST*** be in the csound.com and/or www.csounds.com. I remark: ***MUST***. Probably Richard Boulanger will listen to you. Of course not to me.

A link to this site ***MUST*** be in csoud.com and/or www.csounds.com. I remark ***MUST***.  Probably Richard Boulanger will listen to you, and of course not to me.

SubjectRe: [Csnd] Lacking csound simple/intermediate compositions and .csd files/code to learn
on one hand i agree that it would be good to have more examples
collected, and give links to them etc.

on the other hand i disagree with your general approach regarding a
composition tutorial in csound. in my opiniion,
	1. there is no such model, and
	2. it is not csound's job to go into this direction.

i am sorry the explanation gets a bit longer ... :

-> 1. which model?

with your example models (bach and mozart) you refer to a historical
situation in central europe in the 18th century. at this time, in this
region, there was something like "the" musical language — although no,
actually bach and mozart already have quite different languages and ways
to compose. so i must correct myself: not even in this time, in central
europe, there was something universal. it changed significantly between
bach (say 1730) and mozart (say 1780).

so there are only certain single (more or less different) models, bound
to a historical situation, for instance:
- how to compose a motet like guillaume de machaut.
- how to compose a kyrie like josquin desprez.
- how to compose a fugue like johann sebastian bach.
- how to compose a sonata like mozart.
- how to compose a prélude like debussy.
- how to compose a free-atonal piano piece like schoenberg.
- how to compose something like "structures" from boulez.
and these are all only examples from the european point of view. there
are also quite different ways of composing music in different cultures,
just to mention some few:
- how to compose a japanese gagaku piece.
- how to compose a chinese nanguan piece.
- how to compose a south indian vranam piece.
- how to compose a piece in an iranian dastgah.
- etc etc etc ...

in short: we are living in a situation where THERE IS NO COMMON MODEL IN
COMPOSITION. there are some historical ones (amongst them bach and
mozart). even following this line, ending up in what we call
contemporary music, there are so many different ways and technics of
composing — we cannot bring them into one model ----- not to speak about
other ways of making music, and not to speak about the thousands and
thousands of other music cultures in the world.

-> 2. csound and composing

csound is an audio programming language which offers the possibility to
compose ANY music. and that's one of its strengths, in my opinion.
when we wrote the csound floss manual, we tried to give an introduction
to programming in csound, and to the models of working in the electronic
domain, but not to composing. not only because there is no such model,
but also because it would restrict the usage of csound. and i think
people should not expect this from csound.

so: examples yes, and good when they are attracting and inspiring. but
there can be no tutorial "from simple to complex", as you wish, to learn
composing electronic music.

I agree with Joachim here - there are many programs that almost dictate the way you work, and really should be treated as tools in your compositional arsenal. Max/MSP, Ableton, Audio Mulch etc etc. C Sound can do other things in ways these programs cannot and it is enabling users to take advantage of these qualities that is I think key to how it is presented. Other compositional tutorials should refer to a C Sound tutorial as a possibly useful medium or system to visit!

Subject: Re: [Csnd] Lacking csound simple/intermediate compositions and .csd files/code to learn

on one hand i agree that it would be good to have more examples
collected, and give links to them etc.

on the other hand i disagree with your general approach regarding a
composition tutorial in csound.  in my opiniion,
        1. there is no such model, and
        2. it is not csound's job to go into this direction.

i am sorry the explanation gets a bit longer ... :

-> 1. which model?

with your example models (bach and mozart) you refer to a historical
situation in central europe in the 18th century.  at this time, in this
region, there was something like "the" musical language — although no,
actually bach and mozart already have quite different languages and ways
to compose.  so i must correct myself: not even in this time, in central
europe, there was something universal.  it changed significantly between
bach (say 1730) and mozart (say 1780).

so there are only certain single (more or less different) models, bound
to a historical situation, for instance:

-> 2. csound and composing

csound is an audio programming language which offers the possibility to
compose ANY music.  and that's one of its strengths, in my opinion.
when we wrote the csound floss manual, we tried to give an introduction
to programming in csound, and to the models of working in the electronic
domain, but not to composing.  not only because there is no such model,
but also because it would restrict the usage of csound.  and i think
people should not expect this from csound.

so: examples yes, and good when they are attracting and inspiring.  but
there can be no tutorial "from simple to complex", as you wish, to learn
composing electronic music.

my half cent ... =)

SubjectRe: [Csnd] Lacking csound simple/intermediate compositions and .csd files/code to learn
Thanks for the replay. Now I see my post was not clear. In short there would be not less than 40 compositions (in whatever style) from the most simple csound .csd to the most complex .csd. That's what i meant. The .orc and .sco files that John Fittch mentioned should be in csound.com and/or www.csounds.com

        1. there is no such model, and
        2. it is not csound's job to go into this direction.

i am sorry the explanation gets a bit longer ... :

-> 1. which model?

with your example models (bach and mozart) you refer to a historical situation in central europe in the 18th century.  at this time, in this region, there was something like "the" musical language — although no, actually bach and mozart already have quite different languages and ways to compose.  so i must correct myself: not even in this time, in central europe, there was something universal.  it changed significantly between bach (say 1730) and mozart (say 1780).

so there are only certain single (more or less different) models, bound to a historical situation, for instance:
- how to compose a motet like guillaume de machaut.
- how to compose a kyrie like josquin desprez.
- how to compose a fugue like johann sebastian bach.
- how to compose a sonata like mozart.
- how to compose a prélude like debussy.
- how to compose a free-atonal piano piece like schoenberg.
- how to compose something like "structures" from boulez.
and these are all only examples from the european point of view.  there are also quite different ways of composing music in different cultures, just to mention some few:
- how to compose a japanese gagaku piece.
- how to compose a chinese nanguan piece.
- how to compose a south indian vranam piece.
- how to compose a piece in an iranian dastgah.
- etc etc etc ...

in short: we are living in a situation where THERE IS NO COMMON MODEL IN COMPOSITION.  there are some historical ones (amongst them bach and mozart).  even following this line, ending up in what we call contemporary music, there are so many different ways and technics of composing — we cannot bring them into one model ----- not to speak about other ways of making music, and not to speak about the thousands and thousands of other music cultures in the world.

-> 2. csound and composing

csound is an audio programming language which offers the possibility to compose ANY music.  and that's one of its strengths, in my opinion. when we wrote the csound floss manual, we tried to give an introduction to programming in csound, and to the models of working in the electronic domain, but not to composing.  not only because there is no such model, but also because it would restrict the usage of csound.  and i think people should not expect this from csound.

so: examples yes, and good when they are attracting and inspiring.  but there can be no tutorial "from simple to complex", as you wish, to learn composing electronic music.

my half cent ... =)

SubjectRe: [Csnd] Lacking csound simple/intermediate compositions and .csd files/code to learn
Hi Zoe and all,

For the beginners there is the historical Amsterdam Catalog of Csound Computer Instruments here http://www.codemist.co.uk/AmsterdamCatalog/

But I agree with Joachim that there is no such thing as a composition tutorial generally speaking. It could even be a terrible thing. IMHO.
The online manual gives at least one basic example on every opcode. Up to the user to develop them in his own and personal way.

Regards.
