New piece: Sublimation

"A drone of varying densities built from layers of complex justly-intoned chords with scintillating harmonics." I made this with Csound 5.0 RC2 (nice!). It has something to do with La Monte Young's Opening, Magic and Magic Opening chords, but it doesn't use those chords literally. No sine waves were harmed in the making of this music. As always, comments are welcome. Link: http://mysterybear.net/article/14 - Dave Seidel music: http://mysterybear.net blog: http://superluminal.com/dave/weblog |

Hey David, heard it already through cacophonous.org! Nice! Reminded me a bit of one of my pieces, Lamentation Siderales... BTW, we have The Hype Machine tracking Cacophonous MP3 announces now... woo hoo! Thanks, Jeff. I need to go listen to that piece! I have the MP3 here, and I definitely enjoyed Eroica Spettrale and Echoi from that set. Thanks for the reminder. - Dave Jeff Harrington wrote: > Hey David, heard it already through cacophonous.org! Nice! Following up... Jeff, that is a gorgeous piece, thanks again for reminding me to listen. - Dave Jeff Harrington wrote: > Hey David, heard it already through cacophonous.org! Nice! Well it never gets into those interesting use of beats as a percussion device but the beginning kinda... Jeff Dave Seidel wrote: > Thanks, Jeff. > > I need to go listen to that piece! The cool this is, I didn't plan for the beating effect; it was a natural consequence of the interval relationships. But once I heard it, I got more deliberate about it. I'll probably be doing more of that in the future. I also used beating consciously in an earlier piece, The Gemini Nebula. - Dave Jeff Harrington wrote: > Well it never gets into those interesting use of beats as a percussion > device but the beginning kinda... > > Jeff > > Dave Seidel wrote: > >> Thanks, Jeff. >> >> I need to go listen to that piece! Hey, is there any way to map a rhythm to a dissonance ratio? ;) So one could plan your drone ratios around rhythmic concerns? (Maybe this is obvious - but a technique might be nice). Excellent question. I don't have an answer, but it would be a good thing to know. I'll be giving it some thought, though I'm not sure that my math is up to it. - Dave Jeff Harrington wrote: > Hey, is there any way to map a rhythm to a dissonance ratio? ;) So one > could plan your drone ratios around rhythmic concerns? The beat frequency is the difference between the two tone frequencies. For example, to get 120 bpm: 120 bpm * 1 minute/60 seconds = 2 Hz. If the first note is 110 Hz, the second note should be 110 Hz + 2 Hz = 112 Hz. There are some subtleties regarding positive and negative maxima, but the procedure should be useable.
