Csound 5 v. Csound 4.23

SubjectCsound 5 v. Csound 4.23
Now that we are close to a csound 5 general release, I'd thought
I checked how it performs against 4.23. Its a simple test, but
should serve as a guide for standard users (I know that depending
on the system, as we have been shown in the developer's list,
csound 5 can be much, much more efficient, esp. on Linux).

On an old Mac laptop (G4 550) OX 10.3, these are the latest figures using
'time', for
Csound 4.23 and 5, running trapped.csd to disk:

4.23:
36.94u 6.529s 0:56.38 77%

5:
33.96u 2.950s 0:48.97 75.3%

On a faster machine (G5 dual 2G) OSX 10.4:

4.23:

real 0m33.914s
user 0m12.048s
sys 0m6.189s

5:

real 0m10.905s
user 0m9.245s
sys 0m0.699s

Nice! This jives with my subjective findings going from 4.23 to 5 on
linux as well for my real time ensembles.

This will be the last Cecilia release based on the 4.23 engine.

--> Revised modules have consistent interface with a consolidated sampler
--> Many quad and octophonic modules

Enjoy!

Isn't it still possible to use the Cybil score preprocessor directives
as well as the Cecilia syntax highlighting text editor simply by
loading the Tcl source code into the TclCsound interpreter?

Cecilia will hopefully be moved to use TclCsound (that was the initial reason
for developing it). Then it will be on the three Csound5 platforms.
