Subject[Csnd] Radio Baton User Support
Hello,

Sorry if this is a bit off topic for this list but I own a radio baton built by Max around 2003 - 2004 which is rather dependent on an old version of MAC OS (10.3)  and wondered whether anyone knows of a user group or organization I can turn to for on going support for coping with compatibility with current operating systems (either Windows or MAC).

Thanks in advance for any tips!

Dear Richard,

Thanks so much for the reply and I appreciate hearing from you.

When Max originally sent the baton to me in early 2004, he provided software for the MAC which ran very well on my G5, then at OS 10.3. When I upgraded to OS 10.4, I found that the Conductor software no longer worked. I wrote to Max and he responded in early 2007 that I had an "old" baton and that the protocol for communications had changed with the "new" batons. The only software he was able to supply me with was intended for the "new" baton. He was kind enough to send me source code, with some instructions as to how to modify it to work with the old baton. However,  I was unsuccessful in implementing his instructions, although I will be the first to admit that I have very little experience working with Xcode. So I moved the original software to my old G3 laptop, running 10.3, and the software currently runs fine on that machine (even though the machine is ancient, from 2000).

Max had said the he would reprogram my 2004 baton to function like the "new" instruments, but unfortunately, we never got together to accomplish that. In the last email I had from him, he indicated that he was no longer able to reprogram the old batons.

So my dilemma is that when my old G3 no longer functions, I will be unable to use the baton.

If you have MAC software that supports the "old" batons but will run on later MAC OS systems, that would be great! Alternatively, I could control the instrument from a Windows machine.

Thanks again for your response.

Best regards,

Edward

Edward,

Thanks for the details.  I have many batons here, but I also have many older computers - to run the older ones.
I have not tried re-compiling or running the older ones on new machines.  You might just run it on a PC or even
try setting up your mac to boot windows for the baton.  Or, you could hunt around for a few G3 laptops - they shouldn't
cost much.

Later this summer, I will try running some of my older systems
and I will get back to you then if I have any success.

Sorry I can't be of more help at this point.

Best,

Dr. B.
