Hi floss members,

I've met Adam Hyde today and we finalized the csound floss manual. Soon
its ready to become printed!
Unfortunately there is no "csound" logo existing, we can put on the
cover. Is there a designer, who could offer us help in designing a
simple logo ?

best,

alex

I have been bouncing some ideas back and forth with Alex Hofmann and we came up with this.
For the FLOSS manual we need to include a tag-line and it should follow the general aesthetic of the other covers.

Feel free to voice opinions.
(Bare in mind that I'm not a graphic designer and I only have a 15 year old demo version of Paint Shop Pro to work with.)

SubjectRe: [Csnd] Fwd: [FM Discuss] csound floss manual - release cover
If I may weigh in-- the logo really should be simpler-- based around just the word Csound-- and while the 'computing audio since 1986' tag is cool, I don't think this should be part of a logo-- a simple, portable vector graphic with textual/graphical focus on one word is always stronger, and more timeless.

I am willing to volunteer my modest Adobe Illustrator ability to try a few designs out here... Perhaps we could all submit a whole bunch of designs and vote on them via the list etc. At any rate, I would like to help and I hope my comments are taken constructively and are useful.

As the new webmaster of Csounds.com, I have been quietly updating the site, culling old material and broken links, adding and updating content (like the Max Mathews tribute page) and speaking at length with Dr. Boulanger about a visual transformation and functional expansion of the site to better serve the community- and I have been sketching logos and other vector graphics... So I would like to share my effort to this process and also let the list know that I am very open to suggestions and requests at this stage.

Respect

Thank you for your work on the site John... That sort of effort is often
thankless and yet has a great impact...

I agree with your comments on needing a simpler logo and having anyone
interested submit them... It will provide a variety to chose from.... To
that end I would get the ball rolling with the attached jpegs.... If
anyone has suggestions with variations of them I am open to giving it a
whirl.

Take care,

Michael

Thanks john, look forward to seeing what you can come up.
The logo discussion came up as we needed something for the cover of the FLOSS manual and for this we also need a tag-line. You can see some of the other manual front covers here:
http://en.flossmanuals.net/
A lot of them seem to use some sort of graphic also. This is going to print next week so it would be rather urgent (no pressure ;-) ).

I think there are actually two projects here: the FLOSS cover and the new logo for csounds.com. I suppose it would be good if we had some sort of unifying look across the two but in the timeframe this might not be possible.

Iain, agreed, and I think that the logo you designed definitely makes for a good cover for the FLOSS manual.  In that context, the tagline works great.  Perhaps 3 projects: A general logo for Csound itself, the FLOSS cover, and a new logo/look for Csounds.  It would be cool to have the whole community submit designs and weigh in on the general logo.  The FLOSS manual is a great resource ( I made sure to add a link to it from the home menu at Csounds.com) and I have high regard for the instruments and examples that you have contributed to Csound, Iain.  I am really grateful to have the opportunity to help bring educational resources, current developments, artistic examples, and Csound community members together at Csounds.com, and look forward to highlighting the work of anyone and everyone on this list there as we figure out how to bring more interactivity and utility to the site.

Cheers,

John Clements

SubjectRe: [Csnd] Fwd: [FM Discuss] csound floss manual - release cover
many thanks for your work on csounds.com, john (and to richard making it
possible). this is so important for csound. i am also glad to see this
easy access to the csound floss manual now.

i have some suggestions for the download page
(http://csounds.com/downloads):

1. the csound page at sourceforge for sources and installers should link
to http://sourceforge.net/projects/csound/files/ or even to
http://sourceforge.net/projects/csound/files/csound5/

2. for the git repository, there was a good description of steven how to
use (cs-dev list june 1):
>>
Using git for for just checking out and compiling is pretty easy.

1. Install git
2. Use this command to clone the Csound5 git repository:

git clone git://csound.git.sourceforge.net/gitroot/csound/csound5

This will checkout a read-only (meaning, you can not commit back to
the central git repository) version of the Csound5 repo.

3. To update with the latest from the master repo, use:

git pull

4. The same process is used for the Csound manual. Use this command to
clone:

git clone git://csound.git.sourceforge.net/gitroot/csound/manual
<<

3. for the cvs repository there should be a note that the csound sources
have moved to git since ...

4. QuteCsound is not mentioned at the Frontends section:
http://qutecsound.sourceforge.net/

thanks again and best regards -

Joachim --

Thank you so much for alerting me to these oversights and necessities at Csounds.com.

The site has been updated to reflect your requested changes, and I hope everybody can forgive me for overlooking QuteCsound, which I use every day and has certainly helped me up the learning curve of Csound...

Please share any more suggestions, fixes, or requests you may think of for the site, as I am making daily updates and will attend to the needs of the Csound community as they are voiced.  I am excited to help, learning as I go, and looking forward to getting to know everyone on this list better, through word and sound.

I want the Csound community to know that I am very open to new ideas, and will welcome any and all critique, corrections, and proposals, so please share...

Again, Joachim, thank you for your suggestions for the site -- they are exactly the kind of corrective feedback I hope to continue receiving from everyone, and much appreciated.

Talk soon,

John Clements

many thanks for your work on csounds.com, john (and to richard making it
possible). this is so important for csound. i am also glad  to see this
easy access to the csound floss manual now.

i have some suggestions for the download page
(http://csounds.com/downloads):

1. the csound page at sourceforge for sources and installers should link
to http://sourceforge.net/projects/csound/files/ or even to
http://sourceforge.net/projects/csound/files/csound5/

2. for the git repository, there was a good description of steven how to
use (cs-dev list june 1):
>>
Using git for for just checking out and compiling is pretty easy.

1. Install git
2. Use this command to clone the Csound5 git repository:

git clone git://csound.git.sourceforge.net/gitroot/csound/csound5

This will checkout a read-only (meaning, you can not commit back to
the central git repository) version of the Csound5 repo.

3. To update with the latest from the master repo, use:

git pull

4. The same process is used for the Csound manual.  Use this command to
clone:

git clone git://csound.git.sourceforge.net/gitroot/csound/manual
<<

3. for the cvs repository there should be a note that the csound sources
have moved to git since ...

4. QuteCsound is not mentioned at the Frontends section:
http://qutecsound.sourceforge.net/

thanks again and best regards -

I like the first one. It also indicates the correct capitalisation, or
what I believe is the correct one, Csound. I think this is probably my
preferred one of all suggestions.

My only worry which these is that most of the 'C's are very circular,
and may well not be recognised as a 'C' by people who do not already
know what Csound is - it will be seen as the word 'sound" breaking into
a circle. Any merit in a serifed font version?

Yes, great! the Italic slant also gives the logo a slightly playful
