Hi Jason,
You could try the 'compress' opcode which claims to also function as noise gate, although I haven't used it much. If you want to develop my follow2 gate you might like to incorporate the 'trigger' opcode with which you could sense whether the gate is opening or closing. You could then define a separate attack and release time and also separate open and close thresholds. Sorry I haven't got an example of this handy.
