[Csnd] [slightly OT] source of good samples

My basic request here is where to find good solo classical instrumental samples... I'm willing to buy them, but free is good too as long as they have a minimum quality level. I need a little more guidance than "search the web for free sound fonts." I'm hoping to draw on experience in sorting out the good from bad and useful from non-useful, including among the commercial products. To give more detail, I'm working on an experiment to add musical expression to bare instrumental samples. For example, I might start with a violin sample, then an expressive dynamic shape and a nice vibrato. For this, I need a source of samples in a basic format I can access, such as AIFF or WAV, and in particular I need a variety of dynamics from piano to forte. The soft samples should have a soft attack, and the loud samples a strong attack. I need a variety of attacks, because a realistic attack is a critical factor in realism. (I read somewhere that we perceive the timbre of an instrument as mostly to do with its attack, and much less the sustained portion of the note.) I own a set of solo string samples in WAV format, called "Pro Samples Volume 41 Solo Strings". These are decent but only go up to mezzo-forte, not forte (I'm not sure why). I poked around online for sample sets, but I noticed that the trend is to sell "virtual instruments" that handle all the processing themselves. I just need bare wav. I am aware that free samples exist, which is good, but I need a certain minimum quality level and some free samples don't meet that. So I would like recommendations where to look for samples that include a variety of dynamics and attacks, and come in plain aiff or wav. Thanks, Mike Send bugs reports to this list.
