Subject[Csnd] csoundapi and csound~
Hello all,

What is the 'official' advice for someone that replies on csoundapi in pd or csound~ in max? At work we've not installed csound6 yet and I've got all my new students to download and install csound5 for the time being. Or is it better to install both versions in parallel and then use 5 for the max and pd api? In this case, does one install csound 5 or 6 first?

I'm also wondering if I should be using csound~ or csoundapi~ for teaching if it is likely to be causing problems in the foreseeable future? Then there is the issue of developing FFTools. I'd jump straight into cabbage but we use Pro Tools here, which doesn't support VST. And CsoundQT isn't stable. So we're kind of stuck for a simple interface builder.

Many Thanks
Peiman

Do you guys have Vienna Symphonic Library there? Seems like an
expensive way of running VSTs in protools, but also looks quite nice:

Hi!

Isn't CsounQt 0.7.3 stable enough (that uses Csound5, though)? I have used it in my school with Macs running OSX10.6 and 10.7 an there was no problem. I guess problems arise with 10.8, but unfortunately I don't know much about it.

greetings,

Hi Rory,

No we don't have it. And I wouldn't want to encourage students to have to buy it just to use Csound!

That looks nice but... Can't do automation with rewire.  Can't do proper multichannel work with it. It'll turn into a mess before you know it. And it's not a ice workflow. It's hard enough running protools alone!

Cheers,

Fair point. Vienna library looks like a nice solution, but not worth
the money if it's for just one application. I thought that you just
might have a license for it there already. It's a pity Avid have
locked all plugins to AAX in the latest version of Protools. I doubt
there is much chance of them providing me with a license which enables
people to develop high end plugins for free. Seems kind of anti-avid.
I also heard that developers of previous VST to RTAS plugins had awful
times dealing with Avid.

hi peiman -

it will not be a surprise for you that i cannot confirm this at all. i
used csoundqt on two universities (both macos 10.6) for teaching,
without problems except loosing the midi connection after some starts
and stops. students of mine used it even for live performance on a
macbook, without any problems, and me as well (on a macbook an on linux).

but as to vst and pro tools: i think there is since many years a
vst-bridge -- can't recall the proper name.

The two most popular ones are fxpansion and symbiosis, neither of
which I've been able to get to work with my VSTs. But fxpansion looks
like it might be updated for AAX soon. According to the developers it
will happen when absolutely necessary?!

Cabbage has always been 'standalone' but perhaps you're referring to
the host that I'm working on. Maybe next summer at the earliest :(

Hi Joachim,

Are you using it on OS X?

Is it just me then?

it will not be a surprise for you that i cannot confirm this at all. i used csoundqt on two universities (both macos 10.6) for teaching, without problems except loosing the midi connection after some starts and stops. students of mine used it even for live performance on a macbook, without any problems, and me as well (on a macbook an on linux).

but as to vst and pro tools: i think there is since many years a vst-bridge -- can't recall the proper name.

Yes, same here. I've not had any success with the adaptors.

But really, what I would like at this stage is for either csoundapi~ or csound~ to be working with csound 6.

Thanks

It is true that the SDK is under NDA, so that only registered developers
can create plugins. Probably only a closed-source wrapper system like
Cycling74's sadly discontinued Jitter system would be viable. The SDK
for AAX does look somewhat better than the RTAS one ever was (based on
the old MacOS ported very crudely to OS X), and while such things will
never be simple, I think it does look more attractive to develop for.
Not being a Pro Tools user as such, I have no immediate reason to mourn
the loss of RTAS!

Pat of the problem with developing PT plugins is that they need a
minimum level of support to be included for all the various external
hardware control surfaces, including third-party ones. In a few cases
they have provided simulators as part of the SDK (using one computer
networked to the development machine), but one way and another it is a
rather expensive business, which I guess is why PT plugins are
themselves "cheap" at a whole new order of magnitude.

Hi Peiman,

Good to hear. There were some reentrancy issues with the MIDI modules, which have been solved with the latest Csound6. Maybe the fact that everything was now built using 10.8 made the difference.
