I get the same error. This is in Windows -- Firefox will display it
internally, but Adobe Reader won't display it after downloading. On the Mac,
Safari won't display the PDF at all, and when I save it to the desktop,
Reader tells me the root object is missing.

can you have a look at

i have put several pdf versions there. they should hopefully be readable 
by whatever operating system (and the lulu version has some extra 
features compared to the pdf version on the flossmanuals site).

Both the standard PDF and the lulu PDF open fine in Adobe Reader in Windows.
Thanks for taking care of the problem! I haven't tried the .odt yet.
