Fellow Csounders, Just a quick note to let you know I have just completed a new CD. The title is "Points of Consciousness". It is comprised of six pieces each of which was composed with Csound. They are all 8.1 pieces. You can listen to stereo mp3s of the entire CD on my website and if you would like a higher fidelity CD it can be ordered there as well. Your insightful comments are always welcomed. Take care, Michael http://www.perceptionfactory.com Send bugs reports to the Sourceforge bug tracker https://sourceforge.net/tracker/?group_id=81968&atid=564599 Discussions of bugs and features can be posted here To unsubscribe, send email sympa@lists.bath.ac.uk with body "unsubscribe csound" |

Michael, Congratulations on your new CD. You mentioned that all of the pieces are 8.1 pieces. I assume you mean 8 channels of audio plus one channel of low frequency audio. How do you get so many channels of sound onto a CD? Or does the CD contain stereo mixes of these pieces? best, Lou Cohen On Sep 24, 2011, at 9:06 AM, Michael Rhoades wrote: > Fellow Csounders, > > Just a quick note to let you know I have just completed a new CD. > The title is "Points of Consciousness". Hi Lou, The language I used in the email was a bit ambiguous. My apologies... The cd and the mp3 files on my site are stereo mixes of the 8.1 pieces. I can put a 4.1 mix on a dvd ( I do not like 5.1) but the cd is stereo. Using Csound I program the computer to generate 8 channel wav files. I import those each into separate tracks in Sonar for editing. When I have a finished 8 channel piece I make a mono mix of it. Then I eq out everything in the mono mix above around 60 hz and then use that for my .1 (the sub). The 8.1 pieces are intended for the concert hall... That's an interesting technique for creating the low frequency channel. Thanks for that information. I assume that when you put it on DVD you use dolby 5.1 but only use 4.1, which is what I do as well. Of course when I perform in real time, I can send out 4 channels without much difficulty. -Lou On Sep 24, 2011, at 4:30 PM, Michael Rhoades wrote: > Hi Lou, > > The language I used in the email was a bit ambiguous. Yes, 4.1 better suits my needs. Spatialization is important to me and having 2, 4, 8 or more discreet channels allows me to put the sound exactly where and when I want it. The front center speaker in a 5.1 config is an interesting concept but I prefer to leave it blank. I love to fantasize about a performance venue where there are three levels of 8 speakers... at ear height, above the listeners and below them. If memory serves there is a venue in Belgium like that. Does anyone know of others? I imagine a geodesic dome with an open wire grid floor, midway to its height, where the listener sits and then speakers are as mentioned above. There are 4 levels at SARC. http://www.sarc.qub.ac.uk/sites/sarc/AboutUs/TheSARCBuildingandFacilities/TheSonicLab/SonicLabSpecs/ P On 25 September 2011 22:43, Michael Rhoades |

Wow! That is perfect. My dream space... It would be phenomenal to be able to compose pieces for that space. Do you know if the concerts are well attended? I've only been there once during the sonorities festival and attendance was generally good. But I have no idea about the regular concerts. I expect it varies depending on the programme. Best, Peiman On 26 September 2011 00:49, Michael Rhoades |

For someone like me who composes only computer generated music... no other instruments... this kind of a space is truly a musical instrument in its own right. SARC was the site of ICMC a few years back (2009?). The hall in Karlsruhe (Kube) -- site of Linux Audio -- had height which was great for ambisonics (ask Jan Jacob). [My piece was played too quiet to use the space.] We have been considering using the Atrium space in CS at Bath with three levels but we only have 12 speakers. Look at the last picture on http://www.bath.ac.uk/comp-sci/news/news_0005.html ==John ff > For someone like me who composes only computer generated music... no > other instruments... this kind of a space is truly a musical instrument > in its own right. > Send bugs reports to the Sourceforge bug tracker https://sourceforge.net/tracker/?group_id=81968&atid=564599 Discussions of bugs and features can be posted here To unsubscribe, send email sympa@lists.bath.ac.uk with body "unsubscribe csound" |

Interesting... Did you hear any pieces at the SARC site that fully utilized its capabilities? The new CS building at Bath looks fantastic. Congratulations. It looks like, from the photos, it has a lot of glass and other reflective surfaces... may be very reverberant and or bright to the ear. Every room is a new instrument. Hi Michael, You're absolutely right that each multichannel sound space is a new instrument. I'm developing diverse strategies for spatial orchestration in environments such as the Sonic Lab. I've written several 32-channel pieces at SARC that explore the space pretty well in different ways (using Csound for everything but mixing, given current channel limitations on soundin and friends). When the spatial element is fully integrated into the composition the music takes on a sculptural quality which seems unique to this reproduction context. I hope we'll see a lot more such spaces built in the future.
