[Csnd] [OT] what other software do I need to get xsample chamber ensemble to work?

Subject[Csnd] [OT] what other software do I need to get xsample chamber ensemble to work?
I'm interested in the Xsample Chamble ensemble app which seems to be a good
playback engine, but I'm wondering what other software I need to get it to
work. I don't really understand Cubase, Finale plugs-in, the Kontakt
engine, or what-have-you.

A description and demo is here:

Ideally I would like a way to enter notes in a score or sequencer and hear
them played immediately. If I can't hear the playback until I've saved a
file, loaded it in a different amp, and setup the start/end points, that's
too clumsy.

Thanks,
Mike

By far the easiest way to use this software IMHO, and any other sample
libraries for that matter is to get a copy of Sibelius or Finale as
these libraries can be interfaced directly. Sibelius and Finale will
allow you to enter notes in a score and hear them directly using the
sample bank you've selected. Be forewarned however that the examples
placed on the websites of all of these sample libraries always seem to
sound better than what one manages on their own...

Rory.

p.s. for a free notation editor try http://www.musescore.org/ Since it
was released under the GNU GPL development seems to have really taken
off. It won't let you run VSTs yet but will let you run soundfonts
using fluid synth. There are still a large amount of free sound fonts
to be found on the internet.

Hi Rory,
I'm just trying to be clear since I don't have a lot of understanding of
the situation, but I believe this program (Xsample Chamber Ensemble) is not
really a "sample library" but a "playback engine"---it's an application
which generates a final playback that is much more sophisticated than a
sampler. For example, it adds articulation, phrasing, vibrato, and that
kind of thing, in an intelligent context-dependent way.

So my question is how to get from A to B. How to get from the input of a
score editor (and which score editors are compatible), or from a sequencer,
to final playback. And whether that is as simple as hitting "play" or
whether something much more complicated (like exporting and importing
files) is required.

I'll try to contact Xsample directly.

Unfortunately that is Linux-only. I'm working on Windows.

MuseScore is not Linux only. It runs on Windows, Linux, and OS X. I
have used it myself on Linux and Windows. It's not great but it might
be useful for certain things.

MuseScore is available for Windows: http://sourceforge.net/projects/mscore/. There is also LMMS : http://lmms.sourceforge.net/

Sorry I wasn't clearer. When using Sibelius or Finale you simply add
articulation into the score and it automatically gets sent to the
sample playback engine which nowadays is integrated into notation
packages such as Sibelius or Finale. When I started using Sibelius I
used to write MIDI commands that were sent to an AKAI sampler.
Everything had to be entered as a MIDI command. Nowadays the notation
software translates all your articulation into midi command which are
then fed automatically to the playback engine. So to answer your
question "is it as simple as hitting play?", yes in a lot of cases it
is. Most of these playback engines come as VSTs too so that they can
be used in any sequencer program such as Cubase or Ableton but in my
experience they are a to easier to use from within Sibelius or Finale.
MuseScore is also available for window afaik.

Rory.

Oops, I was thinking of something else and didn't bother to double-check my
memory. My apologies.

Oh, so basically it is not unusual these days for a sample playback engine
to come with a lot of sample variations for different articulation, and it
just gets selected via the notation?

Well, I was thinking, in part, about the work involved in adding all the
articulation marks vs. having the program do intelligent inference. So by
my definition, if the playback engine does zero inference (and I just found
a copy of the Xsample manual---it does ZERO inference and has to be told of
every detail) then it's harder than hitting play.

You mentioned that the demo recordings with these libraries always seem to
sound better than the average results. No doubt that's because the demos
are tweaked to death. In everyday use it wouldn't be practical.

Now I remember what I was thinking of: MusE. MusE is Linux-only.

Mike

This wikipedia entry has a SW list and cross-comparison:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_scorewriters

I've no idea how comprehensive it is. It doesn't include MUP (http://www.Arkkra.com/
) for example.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Music_notation_software seems to be
focused around musicXML which was invented and is distributed by
Recordare
http://www.recordare.com/xml/software.html

From my reading in the are Rosegarden (Linux only, no Mac) Lilypond
and Musescore seem the most mature (I'm excluding the commercials).
I'd really like to see a detailed comparison of Lilypond and Musescore
and am particularly interested in means by which they can be
integrated with csound, via a python interface, for example.
