[Csnd] Light laptop and 4ch audio setup

Subject[Csnd] Light laptop and 4ch audio setup
Hello
Sorry for the slightly OT, but it's for Csound anyway.

I'm building a new performance setup for a friend of mine, she's
currently using a (sort of) heavy laptop and an RME multiface, this is
used to run Csound for live sampling and improvisation. She's been
touring with it for 6 years and the hardware should be upgraded
anyway. So, would it be possible to find something even lighter?

I've briefly checked the netbooks (Intel Atom cpu's etc), and it seems
they can't really deliver realtime high performance. My daughter's
(kind of new) Asus with an Atom N270 seems to run at about 25% the
performance of my 2 years old Dell laptop (Core 2 Duo).

So I would be interested in tips for high performance lightweight laptops.
Also, tips for a 4 in 4 out audio interface with low latency would be
appreciated. I am not comfortable buying something that has not been
tested in realtime with Csound, as earlier experiences shows there can
be significant differences in latency on otherwise comparable
products.

all best
Oeyvind

The MacBooks are pretty light and realtime is no problem. The price
tag is steep, I guess, but its OS is miles better than Windows, IMO.

If its a netbook, Indamixxx is a flavor of Linux that is designed to
run on netbooks, I have an eeepc running it and can do realtime audio
without glitches. It depends upon how much you want to stack up
though, since these netbooks are not dual core.

http://www.indamixx.com/

It doesn't come with csound but you can use the synaptic package
manager to easily add it in, since the os is based upon a souped up
ubuntu.

He specifically said a netbook was not powerful enough...

I would go with a macbook and an Firebox presonus or RME interface (firebox being the cheaper option). I've had a firebox for 3 years now and can't be happier with it.

Until now, she's used a dedicated Dell laptop and an RME Multiface.
Running a live sampler setup I wrote in Csound (MajaSampler). She's
been touring with this for many years and wants to replace even the
audio interface, get a new one for reliability purposes.
She has a MacBookPro that she uses for other tasks, and we'll take the
chance on using the same machine for live audio, with an RME Fireface
400. Since Victor's report on low latency with the internal sound card
on the MacBook, we might even try to do without the RME. Now sure
about the audio quality then, but we'll do some listening tests when
we get around to implementing the setup.

The only issue with that is that you'll get some noise I think when
