Voyager 2 did a Neptune flyby in 1989,... which was awesome to watch in realtime at CalTech in their huge auditorium. To be among the first on Earth to see it all on a 60-by-30 screen. I can't find much info about these recordings, even though I've downloaded these: http://www.amazon.co.uk/Nasa-Voyager-Space-Sounds/dp/B002N7O39W. I'm wondering if these recordings are obtained by simply putting the signal (which is within audible frequency range) through loudspeakers, or if they are made by mapping out to synthesis parameters. I'm hoping for the former! But then, how much post processing (e.g. noise reduction) has been applied to get to this stage? There is no technical info that I can find form NASA.
