Csounders,

John Schneider, Phd, teaches in the music department at
Los Angeles Pierce College. Don't have that email on hand,
but it's in the directory on line. He's really cool and a
good musician. Still does a music program on Pacifica Radio,
KPFK 90.7 FM. Was called Soundboard (as in guitar and other
string instruments), but has expanded, now is called
"Global Village". John hosts on, I think it's Thursday mornings
10am (Pacific Time). He gets into all kinds of music these days.

He has a classical guitar with a neck made special with a
magnetic strip to accomedate finger boards of different tunings
(ie- Just Intonated, Mean Intonated and so on). Google him, he's
pretty cool.

He's a big Partch fan/colleage, has a signed concert poster in
his office at school. I think they even knew one another to some
extent. Two of his CD's have all sorts of music by Partch on them.
Neat stuff. Check it out. Google him.

Hey,... you don't think he would do a show about Csound and other
such open source computer music stuff,... would he? I could ask him.

Cheers,
-Partev

Stefan,
I applaud your appreciation of Partch, but I do not understand what
good it would do to create Csound imitations of his instruments. If
you intend to play his works over loudspeakers, why not just play one
of the excellent recordings on the Innova label? I agree that his
works are difficult for most people to hear in live performance, but
you should also know that Partch believed very strongly that the
instruments and visual components of performances of his works were
as important as the sound. Ben Johnston's arrangements of Partch for
the Kronos string quartet was very controversial for this reason.
(All that said, a Csound version of the Cloud Chamber Bowls would be
cool to have, but not to imitate Partch.)
There are currently two orchestras of Partch instruments in the
world: the original set, now directed by Dean Drummond at Montclair
State University in New Jersey, and the Partch Ensemble here in Los
Angeles, directed by John Schneider. (Those of you interested can
hear the Partch Ensemble on their upcoming concerts June 2, 3, and
29: http://www.microfest.org/.) If you'd really like to find out
exactly how much it would cost to bring the ensemble to Germany, you
can contact John at johnoschneider at hotmail. Perhaps it would be
more cost effective (and a great artistic service) to start building
your own Partch instruments!
Oh, and Chuckk, I agree that some find it strange that Partch
insisted on just intonation with a largely percussion orchestra (I
have my own thoughts, but perhaps that's a discussion for another
time and forum), but remember that two of his most prominent
instruments were the chromelodeon (a reed organ) and the adapted
viola. Best wishes!
