yes it's intriguing with self organizing systems like this.
I've done something similar in csound, using a k-rate accumulator to
generate the metronome pulse, resetting the accumulator to 0.0 as it
reaches 1.0 and generating a clock tick.
Then one can increment or decrement the accumulator a tiny bit
whenever a "neighbour" metronome ticks. It behaves in a very similar
manner as the metronomes in the video. I've also had issues like the
"rebel metronome on the far right" in the video, a single (or a few)
element taking a long time to sync up. I had been struggling quite a
bit to get rid of such "rebel" elements, and thought it was something
wrong with my implementation, so it was kind of reassuring to see the
same thing happening with physical metronomes on a swinging table :-)
