Subject[Csnd] Preparing for release of CsoundQt
Hi everyone,

I'm gearing up for the 0.7 release of CsoundQt, which will be a big
one. If you are building from source, please try the latest git
sources and let me know how you find them. I am interested in reports
from all platforms. If you'd like to build from source, let me know
and I'll give you a hand.

Also translations have been updated. Let me know if you can help on
this front as well.

Cheers,
Andrés

Hello, Andrès,

good plan! I built the last code from git, I use it almost daily so far
everything runs smoothly!

I like the new look (the icon theme)!

Thanks for fixing line-number area padding issue - I noticed too, that
sometimes the numbers were half hidden in startup and planned to
debug it but - behold! - already done.

greetings,
tarmo

Hello Andrés,

I regularly build CsoundQt from git and it works fine on my system
(ubuntu 12.04, csound5.18.02 also built from git). I've just commited
the updated French translation files.

François

Hello Andrés,

It works fine on ubuntu 12.04 64 bits with csound5.18.02 compiled from git on multicores pc.

I have an error when running Waveform_Mix.csd example:

INIT ERROR in instr 1 (opcode SinesToSSTI): illegal table length 24 in table 101.000000

I can't solve it!

Cheers,
René

Building from source succeeds on Windows, but I can't get CsoundQt to
run due to a missing function in libstdc++-6. I'm not sure what I'm
doing wrong. Possibly a mingw issue. What version of mingw was the
latest Csound built with?

Hi,

I think it was possibly you the last who built it... :) The last
actual release was a long time ago.

Michael has been building the git versions and including them in the
distribution, so he'd know better.

Cheers,
Andrés

Andres,

So excited to hear that 0.7 is coming soon!

Trying to build CsoundQt from sources.

I am running Mountain Lion - and following these instructions from Joachim.

Sadly.  I too had a problem that he noted - because Carbon.h was not found.

Does this step need to be added to the instructions?
How does one find, locate, associate Carbon.h?
What do we need to install, in order for the Make to find this?

 CC     sndfile-play.o
sndfile-play.c:61:21: error: Carbon.h: No such file or directory
sndfile-play.c: In function ‘macosx_play’:
sndfile-play.c:548: warning: ‘AudioHardwareGetProperty’ is deprecated (declared at /System/Library/Frameworks/CoreAudio.framework/Headers/AudioHardwareDeprecated.h:329)

make[1]: *** [sndfile-play.o] Error 1
make: *** [all-recursive] Error 1

Note: Create a folder in your home directory. Put all the dependencies here, as well as the CsoundQt sources.

libsndfile

cd to the root directory
./configure
make
(I had a problem because Carbon.h has not been found, but the built worked anyway.)

Andres (and Joachim)

As you know, I would love everyone to be able to build Csound5, Csound6, and CsoundQt from sources - so that, when bugs are fixed and new features are added,
I would love us all to be able to build the latest - and help to test the latest builds.

The next problem with the instructions, dependencies, steps:

In the PythonQt section.  I did the qmake step (and it seemed to succeed), but then when I did make all I get two errors:

Sadly.  I too had a problem that he noted - because Carbon.h was not found.

Does this step need to be added to the instructions?
How does one find, locate, associate Carbon.h?
What do we need to install, in order for the Make to find this?

Note: Create a folder in your home directory. Put all the dependencies here, as well as the CsoundQt sources.

libsndfile

cd to the root directory
./configure
make
(I had a problem because Carbon.h has not been found, but the built worked anyway.)

Maybe best to exclude the example until the bug is fixed? (For the new comers).

I haven't got time to build at the moment (submitting my thesis in a few days) but if there is a recent OSX build I'll test it thoroughly.

SubjectRe: [Csnd] Preparing for release of CsoundQt
Yes something in the release note would be good. I'm just thinking of those new to Csound that's don't necessarily know the difference between Csound per se and CsoundQT. And besides, even for an experienced user it takes could a bit of work to realise that it's Csound rather than the example. I think including something in the release note will solve the problem.

Best,
Peiman

thanks so much, victor. i just tried it, and the example works again

SubjectRe: [Csnd] Preparing for release of CsoundQt
i have improved the performance of the Waveform_Mix example a lot.
updating the view of the function tables is not really working, but it
is nice to see the image at all (for some time the table display in
csoundqt did not work).
in csoundqt git now (working with csound from git after victor's fix),
tested on ubuntu.

Build it on OSX 10.6. It built and worked immediately!! The GUI looks
very nice! I'm looking forward to CsoundQT 0.7.

SubjectRe: [Csnd] Preparing for release of CsoundQt
Hi,

I've put up the latest alpha binary at :
https://sourceforge.net/projects/qutecsound/files/CsoundQt/0.7.0-alpha/

It was built on 10.6, but it should work on 10.7 and 10.8. Testing
greatly appreciated!

The instructions to build CsoundQt on OS X have been updated and
hopefully should work. Please note that the QtSDK is not currently
supported on 10.8, so you need to get individual packages.

Cheers,
Andrés

SubjectRe: [Csnd] Preparing for release of CsoundQt
Hello,

I just tried this and all works well on 10.7.5.

And really nice interface. The interface alone is a big improvement. Congratulation.

Best,
Peiman

OK, actually I just reopened the application and there seems to be a bug.

1-start the program
2- open synth->simple FM
3-quit the program
4-reopen

The widget canvas is now blank.

Hello,

I just tried this and all works well on 10.7.5.

And really nice interface. The interface alone is a big improvement. Congratulation.

SubjectRe: [Csnd] Preparing for release of CsoundQt
Andrés,

Wow!  Looking great and running beautifully - on OSX 10.8.2.

I will get back to trying to build from sources later today or later this week.
(Hopefully Steven has succeeded - as he is now running 10.8.2 as well?)

I did experience on little bug.

When you run the Xanadu example and press the pause button
- the audio continue to loop a buffer (and produce a buzz)

I have encouraged all my Csound students to install and use this version and get back to me and you
with any bugs that they might find.

So happy about this new release.

A lot of beautiful work here - so much appreciated.

Best,

-dB

takes could a bit of work to realise that it's Csound rather than the

SubjectRe: [Csnd] Preparing for release of CsoundQt
Hello Steven,

It's working and looking great.  This is a good plan to use Andrés build in the next release.
It is much more stable and has lots of nice new features.  Can't wait.

And, over the next few weeks, I am hoping that we all get a nice step by step build from sources
for Csound5/6 and CsoundXcode and CsoundQt.

I did experience on little bug.

When you run the Xanadu example and press the pause button
- the audio continue to loop a buffer (and produce a buzz)

I have encouraged all my Csound students to install and use this version and
get back to me and you
with any bugs that they might find.

So happy about this new release.

A lot of beautiful work here - so much appreciated.

hopefully should work. Please note that the QtSDK is not currently
supported on 10.8, so you need to get individual packages.

Is this document something that you all are working on over there at
Berkeley? Curious as I don't have a document planned on my work list
and wasn't sure if there was one expected from me.

Thanks!

We were hoping that you would help us, but we have been taking notes here and...
(hopefully) John Clements will take the lead and make something for Csounds.com, for the Journal, for the WIKI.

Hello Steven,

It's working and looking great.  This is a good plan to use Andrés build in
the next release.
It is much more stable and has lots of nice new features.  Can't wait.

And, over the next few weeks, I am hoping that we all get a nice step by
step build from sources
for Csound5/6 and CsoundXcode and CsoundQt.

Hi Dr. B,

Just FYI, I currently do not have things setup to compile CsoundQt; I
am planning to use the release that is made by Andres for packaging
into the installer. I may get the build going once my schedule frees
up in a couple weeks, but even then I'll still plan to use the
released binaries by Andres.  That way, what he releases and what we
release will be in sync.

Thanks!

p.s. - I only took a quick look at 0.7.0-d alpha, but the newer icons
look nice. :)

Wow!  Looking great and running beautifully - on OSX 10.8.2.

I will get back to trying to build from sources later today or later this

(Hopefully Steven has succeeded - as he is now running 10.8.2 as well?)

I did experience on little bug.

When you run the Xanadu example and press the pause button
- the audio continue to loop a buffer (and produce a buzz)

I have encouraged all my Csound students to install and use this version and
get back to me and you
with any bugs that they might find.

So happy about this new release.

A lot of beautiful work here - so much appreciated.

SubjectRe: [Csnd] Preparing for release of CsoundQt
I wasn't aware you were expecting a document from me, but I can
schedule to look at writing one. It may be a couple weeks at this
point with what's on my current work list, but I'll have it in my
list. If you and John could send me whatever notes you have, I'll
incorporate it into my document. I'll also likely do a complete
rebuild of the dependencies and walk through the build process from
start to finish too, and will merge everything sent to me plus my own
docs to synthesize a new document. I'll plan to place it in a text
document in the csound repo so that it will just be there if a user
downloads Csound. (Something like BUILDING_OSX so it's clearly seen,
and perhaps we can add others like BUILDING_DEBIAN, etc.)

Thanks!
steven

We will pull together all our notes and share what we have as well.

Hi Dr. B,

p.s. - I only took a quick look at 0.7.0-d alpha, but the newer icons

Hi,

I've put up the latest alpha binary at :

It was built on 10.6, but it should work on 10.7 and 10.8. Testing
greatly appreciated!

The instructions to build CsoundQt on OS X have been updated and
hopefully should work. Please note that the QtSDK is not currently
supported on 10.8, so you need to get individual packages.

those new to Csound that's don't necessarily know the difference between
Csound per se and CsoundQT. And besides, even for an experienced user it
takes could a bit of work to realise that it's Csound rather than the
example. I think including something in the release note will solve the
problem.

Sorry for the late response. I was referring to Csound itself, not
the old versions of CsoundQt.

Anyway, I got the issues on my system sorted out and built the latest
git version of CsoundQt, linking to the most recent Csound 5.18
release. Everything works fine so far and it looks great! Many of
the annoying gui bugs are fixed, too. I would suggest making the
arrows for the Undo and Redo buttons the same color, and maybe using
green and red for the play and stop buttons (they're both grey in my
build -- not sure if that's intentional or not), but those are minor
issues. There is a lot of cool new stuff, so a big thank you to
Andres and Tarmo!

I'm very interested in having python support on Windows as well. What
problems were you having? Have you tried the latest 2.0.1 version of
PythonQt? It has addressed the building issues on OS X and Linux.

SubjectRe: [Csnd] Preparing for release of CsoundQt
I suppose I will try updating and building PytbonQt again next time I need to build the Windows installer for Csound. The version I was trying to build is PythonQt2.1_Qt4.6.2.

Mike

Hi Michael,

I'm very interested in having python support on Windows as well. What
problems were you having? Have you tried the latest 2.0.1 version of
PythonQt? It has addressed the building issues on OS X and Linux.

The issue is the widgets window is not shown when CsoundQt is started.
Several versions ago the widget window would be shown when CsoundQt
is started if the widget window was shown when CsoundQt exited. Now,
it doesn't matter if the widget window is showing when CsoundQt exits.
It is never shown on startup. I always have to press the button to
show it after CsoundQt starts. Not a big deal, but it's annoying.
AFAICT, the problem is in the order of window creation and reading of
QSettings. I haven't been able to figure it out, though, so I could
be wrong.

I got PythonQt built after some minor hacking on the project files.
It didn't like the MinGW way of doing things and it had some minor
issues with shadow builds.

SubjectRe: [Csnd] Preparing for release of CsoundQt
Is there any particular reason why CsoundQt is linking to the
PythonQt_QtAll library? CsoundQt seems to build and run fine without
it after the library and header references are removed. The reason I
ask is because it's causing unnecessary dependencies on otherwise
unused Qt libraries. QtOpenGL, QtXmlPatterns, QtSvg, etc... which
will bloat the install.

SubjectRe: [Csnd] Preparing for release of CsoundQt
Hi Andy,

The main reason is to have all those modules available from the python
interface. I think the size of the modules is small compared to the
size of the new examples folder... The new release is quite large, but
I'm not too worried about that.

BTW, do you think you can help out with preparing the installers for WIndows?

The widgets window now opens up correctly but I'm not getting sound
output to dac for any of the examples.

Also, the icons changed back to the older version. Was this intentional?

Hi Andy,

Thanks for this!

You should definitely be getting output to dac. This is still done by
Csound, so I don't think CsoundQt should have any effect here. Can you
double check the output device and rtmodule you are using?

The icons are selectable, you can choose the new (boring) theme or the
old (fun) one on the preferences.

Remember that csoundqt overrides your CsOptions section in the csd, you need to set things inside csoundqt's interface

I got it sorted out. The audio driver crashed earlier in the day and
I'd forgotten.

I see. The theme option is not showing on my system. I can see where
it's supposed to be by looking at the .ui file, but it's not making it
to the built version for some reason. Also, I built with PythonQt and
RtMidi but the "Disable python callback" check box is unavailable and
the only option for "Internal MIDI interface" is "None".

Turns out this was due to an environment variable issue on my system.
I've been running the CsoundQt from the Csound install this whole
time, not the one I was building. I'm going to be very happy if
Csound 6 doesn't use any environment variables.

SubjectRe: [Csnd] Preparing for release of CsoundQt
Now that I've got things sorted out, everything seems to be working
fine. The widgets window issue only occurs when I run CsoundQt from
the build directory. When I run it from the Csound install, it works
correctly, so no problem there. The RtMidi setting wasn't showing
anything other than "None" because I didn't have my MIDI controller's
driver installed. The PythonQt setting was grayed out because I was
using the installed version of CsoundQt due to an environment variable
issue.

Hopefully this run of stupidity on my part is over and I'll be able to
compile and upload the installer tomorrow. After that, you're going
to want to find someone else for Windows development. I'm getting too
rusty on it and I don't have the time or patience to maintain a system
solely for CsoundQt development. Sorry everybody, but consider it a
success! You've all been instrumental (emphasis on the "mental" =) in
converting me to Linux and OSX for my primary operating systems, and
I'm looking forward to the day when none of my systems have Windows
installed on them.

SubjectRe: [Csnd] Preparing for release of CsoundQt
Hi Andy,

I really appreciate your help, and I'm sure many others do too. So
don't feel compelled to keep the Windows environment just for
CsoundQt, get rid of it and then you'll have a great excuse not to
build the installers... :)

Before the next release I'll put out a call for Windows packagers, so
hopefully someone will step up and help out.

BTW, I made some changes to the install script, which are untested, to
include the examples and example scripts. If it's not working, just
roll back or remove the broken lines. I'd prefer to have a release now
and sort that out later.

I'm curious as to what environment variable could have been causing
that problem. Maybe it's some configuration in your Run preferences
for the project in QtCreator?

Cheers,
Andrés

McCurdy's do not.
Also, the widget window bug I mentioned earlier is back. Apparently

Subject[Csnd] Re: Preparing for release of CsoundQt
For me, it launches and plays a .csd successfully, but crashes consistently
(well, both of the first two times I tried it, and with different .csd file)
when the end of the .csd is reached. This is in Win7 64-bit, using Csound
5.18.

Also, the Output Console doesn't seem to be displaying the header
information that tells me what version of Csound I'm running. The first
thing I see is the PortAudio info-dump.

Hi Mark,

I'm not sure what the problem is, but it may be you're using an old
version of Csound. Make sure Csound 5.18 is installed.

Hi Jim,

I don't know what the problems are. All I can tell you is it works
fine here, and I'm using Win7 64-bit with Csound 5.18, too. Try using
the old parser and make sure multi-core is turned off.

Hi All,

I'm getting some reports about issues with the new version on Windows.
I don't have a lot of ideas to go on so I'm curious if anybody has
installed the new version of CsoundQt and does *not* have any issues.
It works fine for me, but so far I don't know if it works for anybody
else. Please let me know if it is working on your system.

Cheers,

No help there. I did this in the Configuration box (unchecking "Use New
Parser"). It still crashed after running the .csd.

I'm using CSound 5.12 (double samples). What's the minimum version that CSoundQt will run on? Does it require 32 or 64 bits?

Hi Mark,

I'm not sure what the problem is, but it may be you're using an old
version of Csound.  Make sure Csound 5.18 is installed.

I'm not sure what the minimum Csound version CsoundQt 0.7.0 will run
on. I compiled it against Csound 5.18, if that helps. 5.12 is most
likely missing the function cited in the error.
