Subject[Csnd] The Csound Book CD-ROMs
Hi all,

I've lost the cd-roms that came with my Csound book. Does anybody know if they're available anywhere to download?

I'm just getting deeply back into Csound after only using it for quite routine stuff for a few years so it'd be very handy to have the full resource of the examples etc.

Thanks

Dominic

I'm sure a lot of people still have the files. (I do.) But I don't know
whether it would be legal for me to upload them for you. I should probably
check the copyright notice in the front of the book, huh?

Subject[Csnd] Re: The Csound Book CD-ROMs
As it happens, the copyright notice at the front of the book makes no mention
whatever of the materials on the CD-ROMs. It says, "All rights reserved. No
part of this book may be reproduced in any form ... without permission in
writing from the publisher." That _could_ be read as referring to both the
print contents and the CD contents, except that the very next sentence is,
"This book was set in Times Roman by Graphic Composition, Inc...."

The clear inference is that the term "book" applies only to the printed
volume, not to the CD-ROM contents.

On the faces of the CDs it says, "The Csound Book edited by Richard
Boulanger -- The MIT Press (c) 2000 Massachusetts Institute of
Technology...." But that isn't a reference to the disc contents either, it's
an irrelevant reference to the printed book. Nor does it say anything about
what rights in the CD contents (if any) are reserved.

Unless anyone has any information that would contradict this, I'm inclined
to think uploading it for you to download would be legal.

To echo and add on to what Jim said, I have both disks still but I won't
upload them to anyone without direct permission from the publisher first
(note that I said publisher because Dr. B probably has better things to do
with his time plus this is really a question for the publisher anyway). It
would be copyright infringement otherwise regardless of who you upload it
to.

I assumed that having bought the book I technically have a license for, and thereby permission to access the CDs. But copyright is a thorny issue and very easily taken in many different ways.

I'll contact the publisher. Some of the chapters just aren't the same without the related files.

Thanks anyway.

My assumption could be wrong though but I figured it wouldn't hurt to check
with the publisher for a more definitive answer. It's going to be a yes or
no answer but either way you at least asked. :)

Thanks for that. I've sent them an email, I'll get in touch with Dr. Boulanger too and see what's changed. I've owned the book for over ten years so I'm sure there would've been some changes by now.

Thanks again

That and the fact that CDs are pretty delicate compared to a printed book, I'd imagine most publishers ought to be pretty reasonable about that.

The official stance is the CDs are no longer produced. It's all done as ISO files on the MIT FTP server so just email the email address already mentioned and copied below and politely ask and you'll get sent the FTP details to download them. So thank you for pointing me in the direction of this email. I've now got all the files again, so very happy :)

Thanks.

Good to know. While you're in learning mode, there are other useful
resources. Tons of examples are bundled in CsoundQt -- including the
examples from the online Floss manual. (I'm not even going to mention my
book, because it's for beginners, and I'm assuming you're past that point.)

Oh I've been using lots of the examples that are bundled in with it. And the floss manuals since I was made aware of them, plus plenty of online bits and bobs.

I'm almost as fast as I was about 6 years ago with Csound now. Give me a few more weeks and I'll be much further ahead. Really enjoying getting deep into it again and the amount of amazing new developments in many areas are very inspiring indeed.

Thanks for all the info.
