[Csnd] [OT] PHD Study (UK)

Subject[Csnd] [OT] PHD Study (UK)
Good afternoon all,

Off topic, but Csound related query for the list.

I'm looking to start a phd, most likely to commence at the start of the 2014 academic year, and was curious to know if any of the UK list members had any suggestions or recommendations on where would be good places to approach. My main area of study, and what I'd be intending to focus on for a phd, is surround sound, spatialisation and ambisonics for live performance uses.

Do any of you know of a university that already does a lot of work in this area or anywhere that has academic staff members who are also interested or actively working in this field?

My apologies for the off topic nature of the message, but I'm sure you can see the relation and intention of asking.

Thank you and have a great weekend.

Hi,

I'd suggest Birmingham, De Montfort (in Leicester), and Huddersfield. In London, for what you're looking at, City University, and now the university of Kent.

Hope it helps.

Best,
Peiman

I forgot the university of Sheffield. They also use Csound and blue.

But sadly no kit (I dropped hints already...) and no history of involvement.

The sursound list would be a good place to ask. Dave Malham (York) is
retired now, otherwise he would have been the best contact, but I assume
York must still be actively engaged on surround/Ambisonic things, and is
very well resourced. In addition to those already suggested (Tim Collins
would be a contact at Birmingham), there is Derby (Peter Lennox, Bruce
Wiggins), and Southampton (strong on acoustics) and I think SARC Belfast
is also active, but I don't have a name to suggest offhand.

Thanks for all the information and the names to contact, very handy. Kit isn't my primary concern, I'm quite lucky to be well supported in that area by both a studio monitor company and a PA system manufacturer. It's more the support of someone knowledgeable and experienced in the field I'm after.

Thanks again.

Yes from the searching I've done today following the advice. His staff profile is for Bath.

He is heading up a new set of multi-disciplinary courses there (at
Hartham Park outside Chippenham), under the umbrella of the school of
Humanities and Cultural Industries. The latest course to be announced is
a BSc in "Creative Computing".

Not in any formal way. It is all very new, the first course only started
in October, and they are still unpacking things. CDP (i.e. I and Archer
Endrich) has been invited to join the "Collaboratory", but I don't know
what that will mean in practice yet. His general approach appeals to us
very much because of the multi-disciplinary arts/science focus.

He has facilitated a couple of meetings with people in Education, about
our SMC-Schools ideas, and we are focussing on that at the moment.
