Subject[Csnd] CsoundVST
I downloaded this from here:

https://www.dropbox.com/s/2r8xeci8dqamm9o/Setup_Csound6_6.01.1-vst.exe

I already had a Csound6 folder, so I made it install
in CsoundVST. I want to use this with Reaper, so I
went into the VST preferences to add the CsoundVST/bin
folder to my VST path. I hit 'Rescan', and saw Reaper
finding all sorts of new dll's, including some mentioning
csound, so I figured I'd be able to see CsoundVST as a plugin
now.

This was not the case. My set of plugins available had
not changed. At this point I wondered whether the fact
that I was running the 64-bit version of Reaper might have
been the problem. I installed the 32-bit version and repeated
my steps. Same problem. I can 'Clear Cache and Rescan', each
time seeing the list of csound related dll's running by, but
they are never available from the list of all VST plugins.
Of course I tried restarting Reaper.

I've been through the same procedure for numerous other
plugin softwares, so I figured this list might be better
then the Reaper list for any help.

Thanks,

Tobiah

CsoundVST is NOT included in the SourceForge installer. Download the installer from my Web site: https://www.dropbox.com/s/2r8xeci8dqamm9o/Setup_Csound6_6.01.1-vst.exe

You must make sure that VST features option is visible and enabled in your Csound 6 installer, and that you find CsoundVST.dll in the Csound bin folder.

Second, yes, you must have the 32 bit version of Reaper running, and you must make sure that CsoundVST.dll is located in your VST plugin search path.

Mike

Well I tried completely uninstalling the 64-bit version this time and
I got a difference, that is probably a good one. Reaper complains:

"The program can't start because Qt5Cored.dll is missing....."

So I'm trying to download something now from QT to satisfy this.
Am I on the right track?

You are on the right track. The Qt DLLs should already be in the Csound bin directory, though.

Hope this helps,
Mike

You should be able to replace these from Qt's Web site. I will look at my installer and see if it is built right, if not I will replace it.

SubjectRe: [Csnd] CsoundVST

I installed the Qt libs, but Reaper still complained
about them. Maybe they are not in a library path
(I don't know much about windows in that regard).
Anyway, I decided to copy them directly from the
Qt directory into the CsoundVST directory.
I also had to copy these before continuing:

icuin51.dll
icuuc51.dll
icudt51.dll

Then Reaper stopped complaining about .dll's,
and the scan of the CsoundVST directory completed
without errors. I still don't have any new plugins
available however, even after restarting Reaper.

I'm on Widnows 7 64-bit.

Thanks,

Tobiah

SubjectRe: [Csnd] CsoundVST
I also noticed that when I look very close at the
large number of .dll's that Reaper is looking at
when I refresh the directory, I don't see CsoundVST.dl
go by, even though it is indeed in the directory.

I also installed pd, but when I tried running the
CsoundQt program, it complained about pd.dll. I'm
not sure whether I there was a library I should have
downloaded, or how make the system aware of these libraries.

Thanks,

Tobiah

SubjectRe: [Csnd] CsoundVST
Sorry, I gave you bad advice. You can't use the Qt DLLs for reasons I have discussed before on this list, you have to use Qt DLLs that I built myself for Csound. I will check my VST installer as soon as possible.

Mike

Anyway, I decided to copy them directly from the
Qt directory into the CsoundVST directory.
I also had to copy these before continuing:

icuin51.dll
icuuc51.dll
icudt51.dll

Then Reaper stopped complaining about .dll's,
and the scan of the CsoundVST directory completed
without errors.  I still don't have any new plugins
available however, even after restarting Reaper.

I'm on Widnows 7 64-bit.

Thanks,

Tobiah

You must make sure that VST features option is visible and
                 enabled in
your Csound 6 installer, and that you find
        CsoundVST.dll in the
                 Csound
                 bin folder.

             All that was true, yes.

Second, yes, you must have the 32 bit version of Reaper
        running,
                 and you
must make sure that CsoundVST.dll is located in your
        VST plugin
                 search path.

Well I tried completely uninstalling the 64-bit version
        this time and
I got a difference, that is probably a good one.  Reaper
        complains:

"The program can't start because Qt5Cored.dll is missing....."

So I'm trying to download something now from QT to satisfy
        this.
Am I on the right track?

I already had a Csound6 folder, so I made it install
in CsoundVST.  I want to use this with Reaper, so I
went into the VST preferences to add the CsoundVST/bin
folder to my VST path.  I hit 'Rescan', and saw Reaper
finding all sorts of new dll's, including some
        mentioning
csound, so I figured I'd be able to see CsoundVST
        as a plugin
                      now.

This was not the case.  My set of plugins
        available had
not changed.  At this point I wondered whether the
        fact
that I was running the 64-bit version of Reaper
        might have
been the problem.  I installed the 32-bit version
        and repeated
my steps.  Same problem.  I can 'Clear Cache and
        Rescan', each
time seeing the list of csound related dll's
        running by, but
they are never available from the list of all VST
        plugins.
Of course I tried restarting Reaper.

I've been through the same procedure for numerous
        other
plugin softwares, so I figured this list might be
        better
then the Reaper list for any help.

                      Thanks,

Does anyone have these laying around? Could I just
copy them from someone else's install to mine?

BTW, is anyone using CsoundVST regularly? Do you
mix it with midi, and other audio tracks in your
recording software?

Thanks,

SubjectRe: [Csnd] CsoundVST
I have replaced the CsoundVST installer file on my Web site. Could you try it again?

Sorry, I gave you bad advice. You can't use the Qt DLLs for reasons I
have discussed before on this list, you have to use Qt DLLs that I built
myself for Csound. I will check my VST installer as soon as possible.

Does anyone have these laying around?  Could I just
copy them from someone else's install to mine?

BTW, is anyone using CsoundVST regularly?  Do you
mix it with midi, and other audio tracks in your
recording software?

Thanks,

Tobiah

I installed the Qt libs, but Reaper still complained

Anyway, I decided to copy them directly from the

I also had to copy these before continuing:

    icuin51.dll
    icuuc51.dll
    icudt51.dll

Then Reaper stopped complaining about .dll's,
and the scan of the CsoundVST directory completed
without errors.  I still don't have any new plugins
available however, even after restarting Reaper.

    I'm on Widnows 7 64-bit.

I did mention that I was downloading from that place.

You must make sure that VST features option is
        visible and
                          enabled in
your Csound 6 installer, and that you find
                 CsoundVST.dll in the
                          Csound
                          bin folder.

                      All that was true, yes.

Second, yes, you must have the 32 bit version
        of Reaper
                 running,
                          and you
must make sure that CsoundVST.dll is located
        in your
                 VST plugin
                          search path.

Well I tried completely uninstalling the 64-bit
        version
                 this time and
I got a difference, that is probably a good one.
          Reaper
                 complains:

"The program can't start because Qt5Cored.dll is
        missing....."

So I'm trying to download something now from QT to
        satisfy
                 this.
Am I on the right track?

                               I already had a Csound6 folder, so I made
        it install
in CsoundVST.  I want to use this with
        Reaper, so I
went into the VST preferences to add the
        CsoundVST/bin
folder to my VST path.  I hit 'Rescan',
        and saw Reaper
finding all sorts of new dll's, including
        some
                 mentioning
csound, so I figured I'd be able to see
        CsoundVST
                 as a plugin
                               now.

This was not the case.  My set of plugins
                 available had
not changed.  At this point I wondered
        whether the
                 fact
that I was running the 64-bit version of
        Reaper
                 might have
been the problem.  I installed the 32-bit
        version
                 and repeated
my steps.  Same problem.  I can 'Clear
        Cache and
                 Rescan', each
time seeing the list of csound related dll's
                 running by, but
they are never available from the list of
        all VST
                 plugins.
Of course I tried restarting Reaper.

I've been through the same procedure for
        numerous
                 other
plugin softwares, so I figured this list
        might be
                 better
then the Reaper list for any help.

                               Thanks,

I completely removed Qt and CsoundVST from my sytem. I tried this
latest install. I noticed that the file name seemed to be the
same, although this new file was a little smaller than the last.

I fired up Reaper and had it rescan the new CsoundVST directory.
I got this new missing .dll. I didn't try installing FLAC
yet, because of the missing Qt libs.

libFLAC-8.dll

Then this error:

The procedure entry point
_ZN22QGuiApplicationProvate18shouldQuitInternalERK5QWindowE
could not be located in the dynamic link library Qt5Gui.dll.

And these are still missing.

Qt5Cored.dll
Qt5Svg.dll

Thanks,

Tobiah

SubjectRe: [Csnd] CsoundVST
This is very interesting. I don't get these problems. There are two possible explanations. First, your CsoundVST is trying to load libraries from some earlier installation of Csound or some other Qt-using software. Second, my CsoundVST is actually loading these from somewhere outside my Csound installation directory. I will not be able to check my CsoundVST until tomorrow evening probably. You could try setting up an environment on your computer that only references your new Csound installation bin directory and the Reaper directory. It may be that Reaper itself links with Qt DLLs, also. You could check the Reaper bin directory, documentation, and forums about that.\

We will stay on this till it works.

Mike

I have replaced the CsoundVST installer file on my Web site. Could you
try it again?

I completely removed Qt and CsoundVST from my sytem.  I tried this
latest install.  I noticed that the file name seemed to be the
same, although this new file was a little smaller than the last.

I fired up Reaper and had it rescan the new CsoundVST directory.
I got this new missing .dll.  I didn't try installing FLAC
yet, because of the missing Qt libs.

libFLAC-8.dll

Then this error:

The procedure entry point
_ZN22QGuiApplicationProvate18shouldQuitInternalERK5QWindowE
could not be located in the dynamic link library Qt5Gui.dll.

And these are still missing.

Qt5Cored.dll
Qt5Svg.dll

Thanks,

Tobiah

Sorry, I gave you bad advice. You can't use the Qt DLLs for

Does anyone have these laying around?  Could I just
copy them from someone else's install to mine?

BTW, is anyone using CsoundVST regularly?  Do you
mix it with midi, and other audio tracks in your
    recording software?

Anyway, I decided to copy them directly from the
Qt directory into the CsoundVST directory.
I also had to copy these before continuing:

             icuin51.dll
             icuuc51.dll
             icudt51.dll

Then Reaper stopped complaining about .dll's,

                          Download the
                                   installer from my Web site:
I did mention that I was downloading from
        that place.

You must make sure that VST features
        option is
                 visible and
                                   enabled in
your Csound 6 installer, and that you

                                   Csound
                                   bin folder.

                               All that was true, yes.

Second, yes, you must have the 32 bit
        version
                 of Reaper
                          running,
                                   and you
must make sure that CsoundVST.dll is
        located
                 in your
                          VST plugin
                                   search path.

Well I tried completely uninstalling the
        64-bit
                 version
                          this time and
I got a difference, that is probably a
        good one.
                   Reaper
                          complains:

                               "The program can't start because
        Qt5Cored.dll is
                 missing....."

So I'm trying to download something now
        from QT to
                 satisfy
                          this.
Am I on the right track?

                                        I already had a Csound6 folder,
        so I made
                 it install
in CsoundVST.  I want to use
        this with
                 Reaper, so I
went into the VST preferences to
        add the
                 CsoundVST/bin
folder to my VST path.  I hit
        'Rescan',
                 and saw Reaper
finding all sorts of new dll's,
        including
                 some
                          mentioning
csound, so I figured I'd be able
        to see
                 CsoundVST
                          as a plugin
                                        now.

This was not the case.  My set
        of plugins
                          available had
not changed.  At this point I
        wondered
                 whether the
                          fact
that I was running the 64-bit
        version of
                 Reaper
                          might have
                                        been the problem.  I installed
        the 32-bit
                 version
                          and repeated
my steps.  Same problem.  I can
        'Clear
                 Cache and
                          Rescan', each
time seeing the list of csound
        related dll's
                          running by, but
                                        they are never available from
        the list of
                 all VST
                          plugins.
Of course I tried restarting Reaper.

                                        I've been through the same
        procedure for
                 numerous
                          other
                                        plugin softwares, so I figured
        this list
                 might be
                          better
then the Reaper list for any help.

                                        Thanks,

Subject[Csnd] Re: CsoundVST
I was wondering about how csound behaves when it's a VST.
It seems as though it wouldn't work for many things, when
the transport in the host software is moved around. I might
have an LFO at .7 Hz say, that starts at the beginning of the
piece. If I'm half way through and jump back a minute or so,
how could csound know the state of all of it's variables as
they should be at that new instant?

Thanks,

Tobiah

It knows. Some time ago I modified the Csound API to be able to position the score reading pointer at a desired time. The CsoundVST code tracks the sequencer score pointer and sets the Csound score pointer to match. I haven't tested this recently, but I will be testing it again as soon as possible. It used to work just fine.

Mike

So does this just handle new events from the point jumped to?
Or would it actually know that I'm half way in the middle of
a 10 minute note and be able to ascertain the current phase
of the note and continue in the middle of it?

The missing .dll files, for example Qt5Cored.dll, don't exist anywhere
on my system, let alone the CsoundVST folder.

SubjectRe: [Csnd] CsoundVST
More on the CsoundVST problem.

The dependency walker did not show the VSTPluginMain function being exported. This is almost certainly the problem. It has been a problem in the past. Probably the module definition file fell out of the CMakeLists.txt build file. I would not have deleted it, but these things happen. Fortunately this should be very easy to fix.

I don't think there is any other problem. See below.

I installed the current CsoundVST on a fresh computer. Csound itself, and CsoundQt, work properly on this computer.

I installed a trial version of Reaper and I had the same problem you did, including the complaint about the missing Qt5Cored.dll.

I installed the VSTHost test program and it would not load CsoundVST. This used to work.

I used the free Dependency Walker tool and scanned Reaper.exe, CsoundVST.dll, csound64.dll, CsoundQ-d-cs6.exe, and libportaudio-2.dll. Only CsoundQt showed any dependencies on any Qt DLLs, and then only on non-debug Qt DLLs (Qt5Cored.dll is the debug version of QT5Core.dll).

Mike

in CsoundVST.

Thanks,

there still hope for me?

There is definitely hope for you. This problem has happened before, and I fixed it before. The problem is simply that the function in CsoundVST that the host needs to call to create the plugin is not visible. It used to be visible, but somebody changed the build rules. I will fix this very soon, probably this evening.

I will also try to implement a permanent fix that does not depend on a special build rule for VST plugins.

Mike

I don't think there is any other problem. See below.

I installed the current CsoundVST on a fresh computer. Csound itself,

I have made some progress on getting CsoundVST to work in Csound6. I am not there yet.

Done:

-- Exported VSTPluginMain
-- Removed fake orc and sco filenames that used to be required, but were now crashing argdecode

So CsoundVST runs as a VST plugin again. But it doesn't get any MIDI from the host.

To do:

-- Re-enable the VST MIDI driver, this part of Csound has changed. Shouldn't be that hard to do. Csound is putting "dummy" rtaudio hooks in, I need to replace them before starting performance, or something like that.

I have CsoundVST working now. My changes have been pushed to the develop branch. I have uploaded a new installer to my Web site (same link as before):

https://www.dropbox.com/s/2r8xeci8dqamm9o/Setup_Csound6_6.01.1-vst.exe

There is still at least one bug. The "alwayson" opcode doesn't seem to work in CsoundVST. I've entered an issue, though I'm not sure it's actually possible to fix this, considering the way the score has to rewind in VST performance.

But I think CsoundVST is usable for orchestras that don't use "alwayson." Note that the examples/CsoundVST.csd orchestra DOES use "awayson" and needs to be modified for actual use in CsoundVST!

Please let me know if you run into any other problems.

I tried this installer, and now Reaper has ceased to complain about
any dependencies, but I'm still not getting any new plugins available.
I tried uninstalling CsoundVST and Reaper, then getting your installer
new, and the 32-bit version of Reaper, but after rescanning the
csoundVST bin folder, I do see a few .dll's scroll by very quickly,
with no errors this time, but I'm still not seeing any new plugins.
I tried this with a new install of N-track as well, but I'm getting the
same results.

Thanks for you work on this, and for any more help.

Subject[Csnd] Re: CsoundVST
Hi,
I just ran across this thread in search of a functional CsoundVST for Live
on OSX. Is there one in existence? Or if there's source, has anyone
successfully built a CsoundVST for OSX recently?

Thanks for any info.

Cabbage looks interesting, thanks for the heads up. I still have some
questions but they warrant a new topic. Thanks!

It appears to be seldom used as it has been broken for some
time. Micheal Goggins was working on it with me recently
but is vacationing until the 19th.
