They start with Nancarrow, so I don't think they are saying it is something new at all. With due respect, I think there was significant change to the output (compared to a normal piano score), mostly in the space of blurring the texture/harmony distinction. Not to mention the granular and glitch effects constructed solely out of MIDI event timings.
If you listen past the halfway mark of the final video, there is at the very least some real vernacular experimentalism going on, if not something a bit more. Also, I sincerely don't think anybody has too much free time on their hands. Some people are lucky enough to figure out how to use the copious free time we have on something halfway productive, and I don't see what's so worthy of mockery in that.
