Subject[Csnd] Quasar Music installation
Hi,

Yesterday, my new sound installation opened. It is an artwork for the
Mapping Authorities' headqarter in Hønefoss, Norway.
The installation is based on signals and processing methods used in
the VLBI system (Very Long Baseline Interferometry), where quasars are
used as stable reference points for calibration of positioning
services like GSP and other satellite nav systems. The signals are
very noisy, so the processing methods are in many respects more
interesting than the signal itself, even though both are used in the
compositional algorithms for the work. I did a presentation of this
project at the Csound Conference, and plan on a more elaborate website
to give information about the work process, and more details about how
the processing methods are translated into sound.

For those not lucky enough to be able to experience the full
12-channel glass speaker installation at its physical location, I've
provided a live stereo stream (http://193.90.68.207:8000, open this in
WinAmp, iTunes or the like). Also a dedicated Android app with
animation and the live stereo stream can be found at:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.vlbib&hl=en

And, of course, the sound is synthesized live with Csound, using
Python for compositional algorithms and for reading (large) data sets
from quasar observations.
The composition is affected by space weather conditions (meaning
ionospheric turbulence etc, caused by e.g. sunstorms). Last night when
I was listening to it, I thought that some of the themes sounded kind
of "fast and a bit untidy". Then I checked the data at
http://sesolstorm.kartverket.no/, and indeed there was a small peak in
solar activity last night. So it works :-)

Øyvind

I missed part of your talk about this at the Csound conference.
Hopefully the material is placed online soon so that I can watch the
rest of it!

Listening right now. Really a fantastic piece of work Oeyvind. After
hearing your presentation about this in Boston it is a real pleasure to
be able to hear the results. Wish I could hear the windows!!!

Thank you for sharing!!

+1 Congratulations Oeyvind! It's great to listen to this after hearing
what went into it at the conference. The textures and character are
great and listening to some fantastic sounds at the moment. :)

I'm listening too. Very interesting and variated!

BTW, I did not have any `pls` player at hand, so I wrote a simple HTML5 page with an embedded `<audio>` tag pointing to the streaming URL, and it worked!

I thought that this could be useful to more people, so I "published" the html in my public Dropbox, at:

Simply pointing your browser to this page, you can hear the music. No other player/plugin required. Tested with Chrome and iPad Safari.

That is too cool.  I played that web page on my Android phone and my wife and I listened to the work over breakfast. Neat!
