Hello everyone !

The platform has yet to be decided ! I have looked at many options - the free features are often lacking, and the paid features would need someone to sponsor this meeting. Another option would be if someone in academia from this mailing list, has a paid account that can be used for seminars and related conferences, who would be able to sponsor us. If you are in such a position, get in touch directly with me !

Thank you all for your interest in this meeting :) It is heartwarming !

Hi,

Whatever the platform is, the idea is great, thanks a lot!

I have been using zoom consantly and have good experiences, too. Recently took part of Qt world conference on zoom, no problem at all.

Looking forward to!

Hello everyone,

Following up on the Csound online meetup :)

Videoconferencing tool:
The options so far are Zoom and Webex. I usually go for Jitsi, for privacy reasons - although if we are recording the talks then maybe there is no privacy to be had. If you still feel that Jitsi is the way to go and you have a server running Jitsi, and would be able to set this up for the meetup, please let me know :)

My next step is to do technical tests with the available options, so if you have answered to this thread with offers regarding videoconferencing tools, I will write you an email soon (most probably on Tuesday evening) to follow up with you.

Talk proposals:
Gentle reminder to send me your talks before Saturday May 23th, 19h UTC, by email at finartcialist@gmail.com !

Glad to see that this friendly, informal meetup is gathering interest!

If you have any question, please let me know :)

Hi Edith. I wonder if we should ask people to express an interest in partaking, just so we have an idea of how many people are likely to tune in. This might have some influence over what platform we use. I would also put a vote in for Zoom. I'm not concerned about the privacy issues, although many have already been addressed. And if we do get some hackers dropping in on our chat, who knows, maybe they'll start using Csound themselves!

Rory,

We can set things up so that one can only ZoomBomb with a .csd of synthesized sound effects!  ;-}

Edith - I definitely want to attend.

And I could do a pretty crisp and hopefully cool and inspiring demo of Csound running on the BELA-Mini, an open-source embedded computing platform developed for high qualityultra-low latency interactive audio.
- I have been putting together a huge collection of instruments, effects, pieces, etc...
Not everyone knows about how powerful, easy, and cool that this little system is and how excellent it's IDE is as well.

I will try to write up a little abstract - 20 minutes would be great (or less, or more)

I guess that when people talk about privacy concerns using Zoom, it's not
that someone my hack into your teleconference (something that happens), but
rather this (cut and pasted from their web site):

Collection of your Personal Data

Whether you have Zoom account or not, we may collect Personal Data from or
about you when you use or otherwise interact with our Products. We may
gather the following categories of Personal Data about you:

    · Information commonly used to identify you, such as your name, user
name, physical address, email address, phone numbers, and other
    similar identifiers
    · Information about your job, such as your title and employer
    · Credit/debit card or other payment information
    · Facebook profile information (when you use Facebook to log-in to our
Products or to create an account for our Products)
    · General information about your product and service preferences
    · Information about your device, network, and internet connection, such
as your IP address(es), MAC address, other device ID (UDID), device
type, operating system type and version, and client version
    · Information about your usage of or other interaction with our
    Products (“Usage Information”)
    · Other information you upload, provide, or create while using the
service ("Customer Content"), as further detailed in the “Customer
    Content” section below

We collect this data to provide you with the best experience with our
Products. Mostly, we gather Personal Data directly from you, directly from
your devices, or directly from someone who communicates with you using
Zoom services, such as a meeting host, participant, or caller.

Looking forward to the meeting - and I have tried Webex and Skype and Google Hangouts - and ZOOM is a lot better!

Personally, I am not concerned about "entities" collecting information about me since I think that this has been happening since I was born and it continues to happen every time I shop online or at the grocery store;  but I can understand, respect, and appreciate that others might be concerned.

Maybe we can do a little experimental group session and see if things work OK with incognito and VPN

I have a VPN and Incognito, but I rarely use them.

VPN slows down my internet by a lot. (Speed tests with VPN give me 100+ where without give me 600+) And this is why I do not use it when Zooming, because I don't want the screen to freeze.

- and yes, I have had my credit card numbers stolen with people purchasing FlatScreen TVs in Texas, Portable Beds in New Orleans, and Wine in Santa Cruz on the same day.
- and yes, at an Airport in Moscow, I was charged $10,000 for a T-Shirt.  (A nice little trick there at the Kiosk)

Luckily, I did get all these monies returned and got to keep the T-shirt.

But worse, because of a setting on my iPhone to "assist me by using cellular is the WIFI was too slow, while I was in residence at Maynooth doing a Ph.D. review, and sleeping before the flight home, I downloaded the latest Bruno Mars CD from the Apple Store and it cost me over $350 in roaming charges (more than the round-trip flight!)  That was an expensive CD !  (and ATT would not give me back a penny of this!)
