Subject[Csnd] [OFF TOPIC]Max/MSP one sample delays..
The last time I worked with Max/MSP one sample delays weren't
possible. IIRC the minimum delay was restricted to the current buffer
size. Does anyone know if this has since changed with later releases?

Yes, actually I think this has changed.
Max 6 has a thing they're calling "Gen", which is something like the
ability to code an external as a subpatch. I believe that includes
more precise timing than general MSP timing.

A little like Csound UDOs?

Yes, like that, but it's interesting. I haven't played with it much
yet, but I saw it introduced at the MaxExpo last year. It's still
pretty much graphical, but a slightly different syntax, and it
actually compiles differently.
http://cycling74.com/products/gen/
now that I look at it, it might be a separate purchase from Max 6.

It does seem to be an extra download. Wow. So in order to 'Experience
new audio possibilities with low-level tools and high-resolution
audio' one has to pay an extra $100 to the $400 they paid for Max in
the first place. I'm shocked.

ha typical!

What is this for? Why don't you use Csound~ instead? I hate doing any
DSP programming in MaxMSP!

Typical indeed. It's for a student who infatuated with Max4Live
because apparently all the DJs are using it!

I think the student package might include everything (this was the
case with jitter at least).

SubjectRe: [Csnd] [OFF TOPIC]Max/MSP one sample delays..
I'm happy to report that we've never invested in Max/MSP! (Why would
we when there is so much reasonably priced or free software out
there). I think I'm fighting a losing battle though. More and more of
the audio technology staff being hired are Max/MSP heads. Its hardly
surprising giving that most universities insist on using it in their
teaching. Then when these graduates look for work as teachers they
inevitably end up using Max/MSP. It's a vicious cycle, or, if you
purchase the Gen add-on you can make it a vicious recursive cycle!

p.s. I think Max/MSP is a great software, I really do. I just disagree
with their pricing.

He can still use csound~? It works fine with Max for Live (except some problems with low buffer size in combination with the pvs opcodes which I asked the list about a while ago but still haven't found the solution to)
