Currently the link to the Csound Journal on the Csounds.com site does not give a full index of issues. It stops at summer 2006. Perhaps someone can update it? Rory. |

Thanks Rory, I will personally try to get to those links you pointed out as soon as I can. But I am looking for help from someone in the Csound community to keep the site up to date. David Akbari - the previous webmaster of cSounds.com (and former student, assistant, collaborator, and all around brilliant and super csounder) has started in a graduate program in speech and hearing and so he doesn't have much time to work on the site any longer. Thanks David - and good luck to you in your studies and research. I can't wait to see (and hear) how you use Csound to assist others and help them hear better. Sooooooooooooo I am looking for a new volunteer to help me update things, change things, revise things, and keep the site going when I am drowning in OLPC, teaching at Berklee, and finishing the 2000+ page Audio Programming Book for MIT Press. Anyone interested in helping out with cSounds.com? Hope so. Dr. B. Hello Everyone, Just wanted to let you all know that I have posted two new Csound compositions on the MP3s page of my website. They are sample based works. The first is titled "The Multiplicity Purge". It is based upon four samples; two were created with Csound and two with AbSynth. The Second is titled "Tunnel Maze". It was composed using three samples a friend of mine made using in ear microphones that he designed and built and a portable digital recorder. In a very large tunnel that drains off a lake and he recorded himself singing a long low note, hitting two large rocks together and dragging several rocks along the bottom of the tunnel. In each composition the samples were processed using a single diskin instrument that I have been expanding and refining for over ten years and the process of "Score Based Sampling". Cmask was used as the generative element. I would love to hear any comments that come to mind. Thanks, Michael www.perceptionfactory.com |

Rory, I have noticed that the full index shows up when I load http://www.csounds.com/journal with the browser on my Sony PSP, but not with Internet Explorer on Windows. You can still access the full index by the link near the bottom of the page so it is not really an issue, but hopefully this will help pinpoint the error. > Date: Thu, 29 Nov 2007 20:41:31 +0000 > From: rorywalsh@ear.ie > To: csound@lists.bath.ac.uk > Subject: [Csnd] Journal link.. > > Currently the link to the Csound Journal on the Csounds.com site does > not give a full index of issues. I have actually been thinking about volunteering to help with the site but have not wanted to step on any toes, so to speak. There seem to be some usability issues to address. But if you just want someone to help keep things up to date I would like to help with that, too. Let me know. B. Brent, Thanks for offering to help. Brian Wong has also offered to help. There might be a few others too. There are many things that we could do to make cSounds.com easier to use and more useful to all. Let's continue this discussion offline over the next few days. -dB On Nov 29, 2007, at 11:24 PM, Brent Boylan wrote: > > I have actually been thinking about volunteering to help with the > site but > have not wanted to step on any toes, so to speak. Steven, Thanks for the suggestions - and the push toward redesign. I completely agree. I love all the work that David did on the site. He made it much more user-friendly and useful, but I think that there are many new tools and models now (OLPC, etc.) I liked, but didn't totally love the ardour.org model. Still - there are many things broken at cSounds.com and many things that I have wanted to include, feature, update for years now.... Brent Boylan and Brian Wong have offered to help. Maybe others will as well. And maybe the first thing we should do is decide upon a new and more open design. Dr. B. I can help too. Web design/development is (mostly) what I do (since when there was only Mosaic) to pay the bills. I agree on using drupal. I use it for my own websites. It's a great tool. If you agree I would like to try a redesign, and then we can set up a number of admin accounts so more people can maintain it. Ciao, - c. Cesare, Hello. I would love you to give the redesign a shot, And then, as you propose, I can set up all the admin accounts for sure. Please note some of Steven Yi's suggestions - especially about RSS Also... Keep in mind that I would like to support again - the internet radio (that used to work) - the forums - (or some new forum system - where csounders could ask questions of specific platform developers) Also.... - i want to set some (possibly newer/different/better forum/mailing list up for OLPCsound developers Dr. B. Ok. During the development I can host everything on my hosting account space. But I need to know if we have a mysql db account and if there's php support (mod_php for apache should be installed). If you can assure me about these requirements I'll install Drupal and I will start working on it ASAP. RSS feeds are builtin. And Drupal has forums too. We can have the same functionalities of ardour.org out of the box. The radio can be implemented as a podcast (with a flash player that plays the playlist). Is it ok? What about the csound logo? can we redesign it too? What about colors? Anyway, keep in mind that I have a deadline for a project which is next Thursday. I will have more time to spend on this after that. Ciao, - c. Cesare, As Steven Yi said, I think I have everything you need. Here is the URL to the hosting company I use for cSounds.com. http://www.westhost.com/ There are many packages that I can install if you have other ideas and needs as well. (For example, for the internet radio, I was running a RealServer) -dB On Nov 30, 2007, at 7:12 AM, Cesare Marilungo wrote: > Ok. > > During the development I can host everything on my hosting account > space. > > But I need to know if we have a mysql db account and if there's php > support (mod_php for apache should be installed). Regarding the redesign of the colors, the logo, etc.... I am open to all possibilities and inspirations you Brent and Brian might have. -dB On Nov 30, 2007, at 7:12 AM, Cesare Marilungo wrote: > Ok. > > During the development I can host everything on my hosting account > space. > > But I need to know if we have a mysql db account and if there's php > support (mod_php for apache should be installed). One of the things I have been experimenting with is the link page to programs like blue, etc. The list of programs could have a screenshot thumbnail that expands to a larger picture on hover (CSS) and full descriptions of each program so users can decide if they want to click or not. Also, icons that show what platforms the program is targeted to, simple single letter icons (W, M, L) displayed next to the link/name of the program. These links could open in a new page, but all links within the site should open in the same page, unlike the current site. Just a few ideas. -- View this message in context: http://www.nabble.com/Journal-link..-tf4899858.html#a14100782 Sent from the Csound - General mailing list archive at Nabble.com. |

Michael, Your new works are (as always) most interesting! I love the varied and amazing timbres and the profusion of (what I assume are) granular techniques throughout. Great work! Thanks for sharing. Thank you for taking time to listen and to comment Anthony. I truly appreciate it. The compositions are indeed somewhat granular in approach; I have been very influenced by Roads' book, "Microsound". Yet, I do not use any of the grain opcodes in Csound. Though I am far from being what I would call "knowledgeable" on the subject, I attempt to take a more quantum physics (specifically string theory) approach to composition, creating event driven content on many dimensions of time and space. I love Einstein's perspective that time and space are the same; they are simply different ways of describing what we feel we experience. This is much in alignment with my understanding of the ideas Stockhausen was trying to disseminate in his paper "how time passes...", especially the idea that pitch and rhythm are both aspects of time or frequency. For my compositions these ideas are implemented using multiple iterations of score generation and thus event generation. The impossible goal is to reveal a non-linear music. Impossible since it is a matter of the listener's perspective as much as the composer's. Thanks again.
