| I recommend SciTE. It is cross-platform, uses more recent key binding conventions, is simpler than Emacs but does most of the same things including run other progams, and has Python and Csound syntax coloring.
My composing environment is SciTE with Python in one tab and my Csound orchestra in another tab. And I know Emacs (which I use instead of SciTE for C and C++ coding).
