[Csnd] Out of range

Subject[Csnd] Out of range
Hi all,

Normally, playing in command line any composition, we get at the end
following :

overall samples out of range: 0 0

Increasing the amplitude, we get values instead 0, like this :

overall samples out of range: 11482 11751

My question : is that a real problem, or can it be ignored ? In other words,
is it recommended to maintain the out of range level at 0, or had that
finally no real interest ? In all cases assuming that the produced sound is
always good...

Cheers,

Sergio

Hi Sergio,
Samples out of range always indicate that you have digital clipping in
your audio output, and in general this is regarded as bad. There might
be cases where you will not notice, and there might also be cases
where you like what you hear and you want it this way regardless of it
being regarded technically as an error. Sometimes there might also be
artifacts in the audio that you will perhaps not notice on your
current set of speakers, but that you will hear the artifacts clearly
on another set of speakers (later). Due to this, I would treat out of
range samples with caution, and try to scale the amplitudes down as to
avoid these errors.
best
Oeyvind

I sometimes would listen to the stuff i have written and it would sound fine,
so i would not pay attention to the "out of range" warnings, but the next
time i listen to the rendered audio fully, there is this one short, but very
loud spike that i didn't notice and if the 90w speakers are on loud at that
time, it blasts your ears away.
