[Csnd] linux distro for csound

Subject[Csnd] linux distro for csound
Attachmentsandreas_bergsland.vcf
Hi,
Due to a project I am engaged in I have to use csound on linux. I have
installed a couple of distros before, but it's been a while since last
time. I remember that it was usually easy to use apt-get or rpm to
install csound, but that the versions weren't always up to date.
I just wondered what distro would be the easiest in terms of installing
and maintaining recent versions of csound? And are any repositories
keeping up to date csound versions?
If building is the best option (I have never built csound before), is
that a lot of work to get into on linux?
Best, Andreas

I would say Debian and Debian-derived (like Ubuntu) would probably the easiest.

Thanks, I'll check it out.
Are there any special versions of these for good real-time performance?

I can highly recommend http://kxstudio.sourceforge.net/ You can
install it on top of any debian-based distro, so you don't need to
install the complete distro. It also comes with LV2 versions of a load
of Cabbage plugins. I still build Csound myself even with this
dedicated audio distro. It really is a piece of cake to build Csound
for Linux.

Lots of nice things here. Can you install it on top of Ubuntu also?
And if building is easy I am definitely tempted to try it. I just need
to get a larger drive for my laptop first.

I use Ubuntu and build Csound easily on it. There are several tweaks to the operating system that you need to make for real-time performance. They are not difficult and you can find out what they are by googling.

You can install it on top of Ubuntu, There's a short description on
how to do it here:
http://kxstudio.sourceforge.net/Documentation:Ubuntu:Upgrade
You'll only need to follow steps 1 and 2, it will give you the repos
which is more than enough for most uses. One of things I like most
about this distro is that it sets up Jack and provides a nice
interface to it called Cadence
(http://kxstudio.sourceforge.net/KXStudio:Applications:Cadence). I
find it far more user friendly than other jack front-ends. It also
provides some really nice patching interfaces for Jack apps too.
Finally, if you wish to ask any questions, or get any assistance in
setting up it has a dedicated page on the LinuxMusicians forums:
http://linuxmusicians.com/viewforum.php?f=47
Best of luck!
