Here are my two cents regarding choppy audio, based on recent experience 
with the (low-powered) OLPC:

You can play with -b and -B and ksmps all you want; the only *significant* 
difference will be made by reducing SR.

That's what I kinda figured. I've been playing around with -b and -B  
and thought I just wasn't doing it right. It's never really worked.  
Thought I'd give it another try, but reducing sr makes more sense to  
me. That or get a higher-powered computer! :)
