Thanks, Alan. You were right on. Your suggestion solved my WinZip install problem (for depends).

Interesting; for Windows 7 Professional the UAC default setting is the next highest of 4 options. I needed to set it to OFF ("don't inform user of any change to computer") to allow WinZip to extract depends.

After making the settings change, I opted to uninstall then reinstall Csound6.03.2 to make sure the settings change had nothing to do with Csound not running (I didn't expect it to). So... indeed, the "illegal instruction" error persists.

It looks like Michael may be correct that my Intel Pentium 4 (ancient?) processor is the stumbling block?

Michael,

Pursuant to your suggestions, I uninstalled 6.03.2, downloaded a fresh 6.03.2 installer directly to my Windows 7 machine and reinstalled it while not checking Python-feature installs. (I had checked the Python features during the previous install to make sure this was not part of my problem!) Doing so naturally got rid of the Python advisory popup when running Csound. Otherwise, the result of running "csound Test.csd" was as before, with fatal error "Illegal instruction."

I also downloaded a second copy of depends.exe, and proceeded to run it with csound and then with Test.csd. I've again attached the resulting .dwi file (but not to the full Csound list). (Incidentally, I had to run depends from within WinZip, as it again would not permit me to extract it.??)

To me, that sounds like UAC. Try going into the control panel and see what UAC is set to. If it's set high, turn it down (or even off, if you're confident you won't accidentally install bad software). The try re-installing again.

Alan

Hi Art. Can you try the latest Cabbage installer?
https://github.com/cabbageaudio/cabbage/releases/tag/v0.5.11-alpha
The window versions comes with a version of Csound I build myself. One
of the main reasons I've been building it myself is so that WinXP
users can use it. I don't remember the reasons why, but my home built
Csound seems to runs on XP without any problems. If Cabbage works Ok
for you I can see if I can build you a full(-ish) Csound for your own
use. At least we can try?

I will review my build settings. If it seems advisable, I will push the CPU target back and rebuild Csound. I'm reluctant to do this because it means rebuilding many other things also.

If your PC is on the Internet, you might possibly find out its Internet address, create a user on your computer for me, tell me the password, and add me to the Remote Desktop Users group on your computer. I should then be able to log in to your computer over the Internet and try to get to grips with what is happening.
