[Sorry for the cross post.]

I just posted a new piece called Second Sleep. It uses meta-slendro
scales (though not in a very scalar way). As always, there are OGG and
MP3 files available, as well as blue/Csound and Scala files.

Hope you enjoy it.

Nice piece, thanks.

I was thinking that it would be a good background
soundscape for a dentist office or something.
Or maybe for an airport, a la Eno.

When I was in junior high school, I enjoyed
wood shop. I was attracted to the lathe. The
instructor belabored the idea that to make an
attractive piece, one must be rather bold with
the design, not being afraid to create a stark
variance in the depth of the cut. With his words
in mind, and being the age that I was, I cut
vigorously into the wood with the semi-sharp
blades that I was given. When I finally took
the 'candle holder' home and saw it objectively,
I found that I had not taken the advice of the
instructor well enough, and had made some sort
of totem pole with rings in it.

If I may deploy one criticism of the piece, it
would be that the cutting tool was not applied
vigorously enough, leaving an over all texture
that may be lacking in providing interest for
the intent listener.

The technical prowess involved in the piece's
creation, and the quite pleasing first impression
of the balance of texture deserves accolades.

Wonderful piece. Thank you for sharing it with us. I enjoy the rich
timbres and modal interchange.

I did ! :)

Thanks for sharing yet another fascinating piece, Dave. I listened to it
several times along with Aurora and Time Wave Canon again. As others have
said, the timbres are wonderful -- especially that horn-like sound. It is
definitely one of the richest tones that I have heard from Csound. (So many
Csound instruments -- many of my own included -- are bland). I am surprised
that it is essentially just a bank of oscillators because it sounds kind of
like physical modeling.

And I always enjoy your ambient stylings. The high-prime ratios in the
tuning were conceptually startling to me, but I found that they really sound
much more interesting (and less "out of tune") than I expected. Perhaps it
is the strange properties of those meta-slendro scales. (I tried wading
through the materials on anaphoria.com but even with my background in JI it
was difficult to decipher).

Congratulations!

Anthony

No problem at all, Steven, if you wish to do so. Thanks!

Thanks very much to all who replied (Brian, Anthony, Darren, Tobiah, and
Art). I appreciate all your comments.

To Tobiah: In this case, I think I was going after something more like a
totem pole with rings rather than like a candle holder. :-)
