[Csnd] Low latency kernel

Subject[Csnd] Low latency kernel
Hi all,

Since a while i ask myself this trivial question, but can't find a
definitive answer, except of course to try really : could be a low latency
(or just RT ? What as difference ?) kernel useful for Csound, assuming that
i (2.6.32-5-amd64 on Debian) use it only with Blue or directly in command
line, with Portaudio or Alsa as realtime renderer, but never with Jack,
Pulseaudio or any sound server or other additional mechanism.

What do you mean about ?

Cheers,

Sergio

yes, definitely. Your gains with alsa (or portaudio) could be significative. It might also depend on the HW and its alsa module. With an RT kernel, I used to be able to go down to 32 samples in my laptop with the onboard sound, but somehow, with my usb quattro, I could only get to 256 before dropouts started.

Regards

Hi Victor,

Thank's greatly for your ambiguityless answer, that's exactly what i
expected, yes or no. Now i'll search what Debian offers, i readed that RT
kernels are available in several versions and ports.

Just a supplemetar question again : is there a différence between what is
named "RT kernel" and "low latency kernel", or there are only two words for
the same thing ?

Cheers,

Sergio

Yes. Also to switch between the kernels will need (for me), each time, the
full re-compilation of the (Nvidia) graphic driver. That can be a bit
worrying, because i some times readed about an eventual "unstability" of the
RT kernels. But in all cases the only way is to try physically...
