Also, FWIW, if your files are titled soundin.1, soundin.2, etc., you can 
access them (e.g., in diskin) by simple numeric variable (1 and 2 in the 
above cases).

I don't think so.
I've mostly resorted to using e.g. FLcount to change a number, and
then code the mapping from number to file name in csound instrument
code.
