I'm noticing that I have to be careful, using Loscil, that the note duration of the sample I want to play doesn't exceed the length of the sample itself. Otherwise, a buzzing occurs like Loscil's trying to read from data that isn't there? This is hard to manage when the frequency playback varies, it seems to mean adjusting the duration for every new pitch to avoid an undesirable sound.

Are you using 6.10.0?  There were some issues in loscil in 6.09.x.  If
you are using 6.10, could you post a demo CSD so that we can try to
reproduce the problem?
