Subject[Csnd] Re: [OT] Moog how-to manuals
I have Arturia's Moog Modular V ver2.5, a virtual System-5 modular
set-up, a la- like the "Switched On Bach" system used by Wendy Carlos
(back when Wendy was Walter Carlos). It comes with a manual that shows
you what the function module are, how they work and how to use them.
Also check out the website for "Modular V" tutorials.

Propellorhead has good tutorials as well, great synth "Demystified"
tutorials on function blocks for their "Reason" software which I also
have on my computer. But then again, I work at Line 6, and we're the
North American distributor for Propellorhead software products. And
my department wants to be sure I'm set-up, so they gave me Reason-3.
Bought ver.4, but since my OS won't run it, it resides on my music
partner's computer.

Propellorhead tutorials are good for synthesis in general, while the
manual that comes with the Moog Modular V has Moog specific tutorials.
It's pretty good.

Happy hunting, happy reading,
-Partev

Thanks for the reply. I did try that, and it was hard to make sense of
the results. None of the results are tutorial web pages, as one would
hope for. Most of them are not books.

Searching for "moog synthesizer" at Amazon brings up some books. Some of
them have Moog in the title but appear to be "the story of" type books,
or else technical manuals. There are two "how-to" books about general
analog synthesis. I'm guessing they would have the tips I'm looking for,
huh?

Thanks,
Mike

You could also take a look at SoundonSound's "synth secrets", if you
aren't already aware of it.
http://www.soundonsound.com/sos/allsynthsecrets.htm

The articles explain very generically how to produce a number of
different types of sounds
using analog type techniques (with a little fm as well).

There are frequently block diagrams for an 'ideal' solution for
creating the sound, which I have
often constructed in csound as a starting point when experimenting.

Csound itself is a very good tool for learning these techniques, even
if the results often aren't as
immediately satisfying as those produced by commercial or analog
equipment. The resources
available for learning in csound such as the Jacob Joaquin's excellent
'Exploring Analogue Synth Techniques'
and Dr. Boulanger's indispensable tutorials, http://csounds.com/tutorials.
Along with articles in the Csound Journal such as
http://www.csounds.com/journal/issue10/BasicAnlSynthDesigns.html
These all lay a solid foundation for working with any software or
hardware on which these techniques can be applied.

There's no secrets, and there's nothing a book specifically intended
for a Moog synthesizer could tell you that any other book about
subtractive synthesis couldn't.
If I'm wrong on this, someone call me out.

Csound is just a very flexible modular with an insane number and
variety of modules. Sort of.
Look at the modules in the emulator. They should have names that look
a lot like a few csound opcodes.
Some even literally share names.
(ADSR, vco/vco2, moogvcf, lfo, etc.)

Did you have any specific questions?
