[Csnd] suggestions for the Windows release

Subject[Csnd] suggestions for the Windows release
Michael and everyone,

now that 5.12 for Windows is out and working well, I have a few
suggestions for a release package. This is following the experiences
we had with Mac users.
Apparently, most users seemed to have appreciated having a single
donwload of Csound and Qutecsound, which we started providing in the
release
for OSX. Dr.B. provided a collection of CSDs for it, which cover a lot
of ground as well, so we added that too and it was received well.
Also, we have always been providing a manual that is installed with
Csound, which also seems to be useful.

So my suggestion for additions to the Windows release would be:
qutecsound, a big examples package (in addition to what is already
provided) and
the manual. I'm sure Dr.B. would be very happy to pass on to you his
collection of examples, but if not, you can pick them up from me.

Thanks

Victor

Victor and everyone,

Happy to oblige.

On the Mac, it has been nice (especially for beginners - or returning
Csounders) to download the latest from SourceForge and get everything
they need to use, explore, discover and be "inspired" by Csound (right
out of the box). Right there in that single Csound folder.

It would be great if all the release versions for all three major
platforms included this more "complete" package. (include the same
"expanded" package whatever that might be)

The collection of instrument models of which Victor is speaking comes
from The Best of The Csound Catalog, Assorted Chapters and Tutorials
from The Csound Book, and a lot of the materials that I have been
collecting over the years. It was originally prepared for release
with the OLPC laptops. Many have appreciated having this set of
models - especially the MIDI and General MIDI instruments.

I agree, Victor, but it looks like all of these things are already in
the Windows installer except for the manual. I just verified this by
deleting my install directory and reinstalling.

I just posted a message saying it was all there but for the manual, but
I was wrong -- the manual is there as well. The Windows installer is
quite complete from my point of view, and working well for me, I should
add -- thanks Mike!

yes.

they do seem to be there and that's great - awesome and thanks for
including them!

in fact...

there is a lot of stuff there (that might confuse a beginner for sure
and might not "just work"
- like the cscore, lua, etc... stuff - which is not in the Mac Package.

also..

there is no README (getting started, what's here doc?)

and...

when I launch QuteCsound for the first time and try to "open"
something, it doesn't take me to this folder or these files - rather
it takes me to one of Michael's .py files/folders that does not
(for me at least) run from QuteCsound... (that would certainly confuse
a beginner.)

it makes sense that Michael would want to install "all" the things
that he uses to compose
and develop, but... perhaps these could be organized in a more
"advanced" or "research
folder" and perhaps they could be standardized so that these same
items (if they do work
on all platforms) would be included with all installed packages?)

Hi,

The python stuff should run OK from QuteCsound. otherwise it's a bug... =)
But it's true that it would be better to see "normal" csds by default.

Hi Michael,

I do not see the aim to have a cut down version of Csound. People should
take time in learning Csound and even a more graphical application like
MAX/MSP has a good learning curve. Beside, when will you compiled a version
with CsoundAC and CsoundVST?

Thank for all your hard work,

SDK. This however is a fair amount of work, especially in the vst4cs
code.

Also, about CsoundVST and the vst4cs opcodes, there is the possibility
of using the VeSTige code to eliminate dependency on the Steinberg VST
SDK. This however is a fair amount of work, especially in the vst4cs
code.

For the little I know on the subject (mainly from French sites). The VST
plugins built with the Vestige library for Windows and/or Linux applications
does not need to register at the Steinberg's site. I shall be legal to use
it without reserve.
