[Csnd] Half-apologies on Fw: Deficiencies in Csound5.12.1.zip

The downloads section of your site brings one to the sourceforge page: fair enough.
The sourceforge page, being a nonprofit, has ads all over the place: fair enough.
The ads make the user's brain go into a "weed out unimportant details" mode: fair enough.
There's a giant green box on this page saying "Download now": fair enough.
The downloaded file is just a zip with directories (like, for ex, blender does): fair enough.

The PROBLEM is that the zip you focus people's attention on is not the one that absolute newbies are going to want: not fair!    They will want the Csound5.12.1-gnu-win32-d.exe.

I hope my comments provide an honest and fresh perspective of how a spanking noob will interact with your site.

(Typed before I get the digest with all the comments on my prior note.)

Hi. I just wanted to get back in the CSound action, so I downloaded the Csound5.12.1.zip file from http://csounds.com/downloads.

I agree, the zip file is usually NOT what the user is looking for. The
SF page should be highlighting the installer for the user's platform. I
find this a bit confusing myself, even as someone who's been using
Csound for over 6 years and who has been a professional programmer for
over 25 years.

To do that, when we upload the package, we have to mark it 'mac',
'windows', 'linux'. Maybe the windows package was wrongly assigned?

I have just labeled the Windows installer as "Windows," thus making it
the default download for that platform. The zip file I would have
thought should be labeled 'source' but there is no such label, leading
me to wonder if people who want sources are not increasingly using the
'download GU tarball' link to get them
(http://csound.cvs.sourceforge.net/viewvc/csound/?view=tar). If that
is the case perhaps we should have only binaries in the Files section,
and point people who want sources to the tarball link.

Regards,
Mike

That makes sense, Mike. Plus people who really want the sources can get
them via CVS as well, and will tend to understand how and why.
