[Csnd] still no windows release..

Subject[Csnd] still no windows release..
Have window binaries ceased development? Still no 5.12 available
almost a month after it was officially released. No one else seems
bothered by this, have I missed something, is it available somewhere
apart from sourceforge?

Subject[Csnd] Re: still no windows release..
I have mentioned several times on this list that while my apartment is
being renovated, I do not have time enough or frequent enough access
to my Windows machine to produce the Windows installers.

I will make a new Windows installer as soon as I have moved back into
the apartment. Right now, that looks like late April or early May.

Somebody else could do this; complete instructions are available in
Csound CVS. But It's a fairly big job especially if you want to
actually run things and make sure they work, and update third party
libraries (many of which have to be built and need tweaks to their
build systems).

Regards,
Mike

I read the instructions about "Building Csound" in the manual
(http://www.csounds.com/manual/html/BuildingCsound.html), and though it
doesn't sound like fun, i would go for it (at least, for personal use),
if i had access to more specific instructions. I failed to find such
instructions while browsing the CVS via the web interface. Exactly where
are they, and how far would you go in sharing with us any secrets of the
process (i am sure there are).

Panos

Subject[Csnd] Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: still no windows release..
I think one of the key things in Windows is to get your development system right.

1.You will ideally want to install MINGW and MSYS, to start with and make sure they are working alright.

2. Then you will need Python 2.6

3. Install scons and make sure the 'scons'  is in your path for MSYS

4. Get a precompiled libsndfile (or build it yourself)

5. Get a precompiled portaudio (Mike Gogins might be able to point you to one).

6. Get portmidi. Make sure all these libs are in good places for MSYS (ie /usr/local/lib, which is mapped to \msys\1.0\local\lib
and headers are in /usr/local/include

7. Now you'll probably have everything for a basic system. Get the source package, unpack it and at the top directory type
scons and the system should build csound.

8. Csound will be in that directory.

Sorry I can't be of more help. I don't have a windows system anymore, having migrated to OSX and Linux completely now.

Regards

Victor

Thank you for the information.

I have compiled Csound in the past under OS X, following mr. Kozar's
fine guidance.

I also have compiled Csound under Linux, having followed this excellent
set of instructions: http://www.csounds.com/node/125

I wish i had something similar for Windows.

Also, i think that building Csound under ALL platforms should be common
knowledge (after all, the recent survey shows that there are enough
people that prefer this method for installation). It would also take
some of the related burden off the shoulders of the fine people that
usually do the work for us.

Panos

I have converted csound-build.tex to csound-build.pdf. Is anybody
interested in having the pdf posted somewhere? If so, then where
would be the best place to put it?

I'm off to a good start on this. I've been able to obtain all the
dependencies except for bufferoverflowu.lib, which I'm not sure is
needed anymore -- we'll find out soon enough. The only thing I'm
wondering about is the DirectSound portion of PortAudio. Is the
DirectX sdk needed for this?

Why don't you get a prebuilt PortAudio DLL? I think you might find one
in the previous release of Csound...

We don't want the most recent version? Regardless, I like learning
how to build things. I'll give building portaudio a try and if it
turns out to be too difficult than I'll fall back to using
portaudio.dll from the Csound 5.11.1 release. Thanks for the
suggestion.

I don't think there is a lot of difference between the portaudio that
is in 5.11 and any newer version. The only thing might be support for
the newer windows audio APIs (for vista/7, whatever they are called...)

tools used when the 5.11 release was put together, and since I've been
to dll hell many times, I know for a fact that it's not a fun place to
even think about visiting again =)

Maybe I'm being over-cautious, but I've always found it better to err
on the side of ease of debugging when trying to figure out the tricky
stuff, and having a source-built portaudio will definitely be a bonus
if things go awry in the resulting binaries.

To be honest, it doesn't look like portaudio is that hard to build.
Some of the other dependencies are much scarier looking.

There have been a few changes. The only one I remember off the top of
my head is that you don't need to patch the FluidSynth sources any
more, development there has resumed and they have incorporated the
patches into their head sources.

There has been recent activity with PortAudio, it may be possible to
build now with configure and get all the drivers, at any rate an
attempt should be made to build with up to date sources.

Mike

Thanks for the info. The fltk build went smoothly, and "building" gmm
was nothing to worry about in retrospect =) ... portaudio is next on
the list.

The portaudio build went well with asio, directx, and wmme. No luck
with the kernel driver.
The directx sdk was not needed. I found a version 9 dsound.h in stk,
and it worked fine.

Looking good so far,

I'm using mingw via msys. The only thing I had to do was add some
windows specific -D flags to CFLAGS and CXXFLAGS in the Makefile after
configuring, along with the flags Michael recommends in the custom
SConstruct found in csound-build.tex.

The flags I added:
-DWINDOWS -D_WIN32 -DWIN32 -DWINVER=0x0501
-DTIME_KILL_SYNCHRONOUS=0x0100
-DKSAUDIO_SPEAKER_DIRECTOUT=0 -DMETHOD_NEITHER=3 -DFILE_ANY_ACCESS=0

to get it built using the instructions at

Yes, that's what I was talking about. The build instructions should be
updated to refer the builder to these instructions.

Subject[Csnd] Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: still no windows release..
The portaudio and fluidsynth builds didn't work correctly.

The portaudio build split up my soundcard's sample-rate capabilities
into 44100 and 48000, and listed a separate device for each but
wouldn't allow sr=44100 on the 48000 "device" and vice-versa. When
trying to use the ASIO4ALL driver, Portaudio wouldn't accept any rates
at all. It's too bad, too, because it seemed to run much faster than
the older portaudio build.

The fluidsynth seemed fine, but the new GLib dependency kept throwing
an error message saying "The procedure entry point g_assertion_message
could not be located in the dynamic link library libglib-2.0-0.dll" --
which I haven't figured out how to fix, yet.

Anyway... I've posted a candidate double precision installer that uses
portaudio and fluidsynth from 5.11.1, for people to test. It can be
found at http://csound.sourceforge.net/Csound5.12.1-gnu-win32-d--RC1.exe
It should have everything except the docs (which I haven't gotten
around to building yet). Don't forget to move fluidOpcodes.dll out of
the plugins64 folder (or rename its extension) if you're going to be
using QuteCsound.

Cheers,
~andy.f

Hi,

Thanks, that's very useful for many people. How have you handled
python? Did you build the python opcodes, what version of python is
required?
Will Csound have problem running out of the box if python is not installed?

Cheers,
Andrés

Subject[Csnd] Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: still no windows release..
I built the python opcodes using Python 2.6, and tested
examples/python/Koch.py. I also uninstalled Python after installing
Csound and it didn't seem to be a problem, but this is the first time
I'm building a full Csound package so I'm not sure if everything is
ok. Testing on other machines is needed.

I just tried to use the install on a clean Win7 setup, and it
complained about missing libsndfile-1.dll and pthreadGC.dll, so
apparently Win7 is seeing through the library naming trickery better
than WinXP does. Renaming libsndfile.dll and pthread.dll works for
now. I will fix it for the final build.

Please test the installer. The more setups it gets tested on, the better.

Cheers,
~ andy.f
