Andrés,

QuteCsound keeps getting better and better and better and better!!!!!

WOW.

Thanks so much for all your work on this important, powerful,
intuitive and *essential!* frontend for Csound5.

Today I was able to run a ton of my MacCsound GUI instruments and more
importantly, I was able to run many of the
examples and works that were created by my students over the years.
So happy to be able to showcase their work again!

Thanks to you...

I can't wait to show off this new version and assign this weeks'
projects!

I find that turning off displays - and running in a separate thread -
and using portAudio is quite stable under osX 10.5.5

Your work on the manual - and on this front end - is
sooooooooooooooooooo much appreciated!!!!!

Re: [Csnd] [ann] QuteCsound 0.3.7 Andres,

This is looking terrific! Thanks so much for all your hard work.

I have developed an extremely large live performance project with MacCsound and it translates quite well to QuteCsound. There are some minor appearance differences, and after just a little testing I think the sound is not exactly the same; but at this point it’s a little early to tell, since I’ve been tweaking the sound just today.

For testing purposes, would you be interested in this project? There’s about 2900 lines of orc code, which interacts with many, many widgets. I would be happy to post an archive of the entire project, including the files that it references, if you like.

Hi all,

I've put up a new version of QuteCsound for Mac Intel and PPC.
QuteCsound is now very close to completely replicating the full set of
widgets from MacCsound, with the addition of the new Controller widget
in this release. The major show stopper, which was the inability to
run threaded on the Mac platform seems to be addressed as long as
displays are disabled in the command line options (-d in Addtional
command line flags) and the virtual MIDI input keybard is not used.
Please report if you still find QuteCsound crashing under ordinary
circumstances.
This version also includes many small bugfixes an several small new
features which have been suggested on the qutecsound-users list.

You can get it at:
https://sourceforge.net/project/showfiles.php?group_id=227265

New in 0.3.7:
-Implemented "Controller" widget, which replicates the MacCsound
ioMeter widget. It can act as a meter, but also as an x-y joystick
controller
-Opcode entries can now be viewed in external browser
-New back and forward actions for dock help (Alt+left and Alt+right)
-Added option to show widgets on run
-f-sigs and labels are now colored in the editor
-Utilities now run through the API if useAPI is set in options
-Added option to use/disable command line options from QuteCsound
-All open files are remembered, not only the last active one
-When widget values change, document is flagged as modified

Fixed:
-Stability on OS X greatly improved
-Console widget now resizes properly
-Button now saves its value
-Fixed printing of messages and read/write widget values when running
in same thread
-Browse buttons now work in utilities dialog
-Hardware buffer active preference is now saved

Please consider joining the QuteCsound users mailing list for
QuteCsound related issues:

Andres,

I have not had time to really examine the project under QuteCsound, but I'm
very excited about it, and I'll be working with it shortly. Thanks for your
tips about improving real-time performance.

The cosmetic differences I've seen so far are all for the better:

1. I'm happy that the exact sizes and positions of each widget can be set
numerically. Now I'll be able to align the many objects much more precisely
and easily.

2. Because the screen is so crowded, I'm happy that I can set widget sizes
smaller than in MacCsound.

3. I notice that during performance I can control the dial/knob settings
with the arrow keys. This should make certain live performance processes
much easier than now.

4. The screen/pane layout, with the manual readily available, looks like a
very tangible convenience.

I have uploaded my project to http://www.jolc.net/lcpublic/gransynth/

>From there you can download the .zip file. Because it was developed with
MacCsound I have obviously only used it on OSX.

When you run the project, please note that the upper right-hand group of
widgets causes the computer keyboard to function like a kind of organ
keyboard. Each of the four rows of similar widgets pertains to
characteristics of sounds made by the four corresponding rows of the
computer keyboard (the `1234... row; the qwerty.... row; the asdfg row...;
and the zxcvb... row.)

The .zip archive includes a screenshot of the appearance of the screen as
seen with MacCsound. The size of the window exactly fits my Mac iBook's
screen (although I develop the project on a larger computer with a larger
screen.)

Anyone else who would like to download the project is most welcome, and of
course comments and suggestions are welcome, too.

Hi Andrès,

On another note, will a Windows version will be available soon? Since, I
would like to see how the csd provided by Lou behaves in a WIndows
environment...

Kind regards,

Re: [Csnd] Re: Re: Re: [ann] QuteCsound 0.3.7 Hello, Andres,

I’m glad that my project will be of some help to you.

I have actually had difficulty getting ANY sound out of the project using QuteCsound. I tried it out this morning.

I think the problem is that I’m not at all sure how to set up for using my sound equipment.

I have  a MOTU 828MKII connected to my G5 via firewire. MOTU’s drivers are installed on my system and MacCsound and the rest of my system has no difficulty identifying and using this sound device.

The settings provided by QuteCsound are different from what is required by MacCsound. First, I must choose for RT Audio:  portaudio or coreaudio. I don’t know which to choose, so I’ve tried both with no success.

Second, there are a couple of text boxes for input and output devices. The default text in those boxes doesn’t mean anything to me, so I typed in the identical text that the Mac’s Audio/MIDI Setup displays. I ended up with no sound.

Any advice you can provide in this area would be most helpful.

Another interesting issue. I noticed a diagnostic message from csound suggesting that I had a line of code with an unexpected comma in it. The line is not in the orc or sco sections. I finally found it in the section that MacCsound appends to my code, and which describes all the widgets. Apparently this section is not terminated with the correct tag (</something or other>); in fact it’s terminated with just part of a line of text.

I think this may have crashed QuteCsound on one occasion. I deleted that last incomplete line – I don’t even know what widget is missing as a result! - and inserted the final tag. You may wish to do the same. I think I’ve encountered similar corrupted text lines appended by MacCsound in the past, for example associated with saving alternate setups.

Enough blathering! any advice on how to point QuteCsound to my MOTU device will be most appreciated.

-Lou

Hi Lou,

Thanks for the csd, interesting project. It provides a great test for
QuteCsound. It exposed a problem with button positioning, which I've
fixed in my sources. It really taxes QuteCsound, and has given me some
ideas for improvement, which were no problem with a small number of
widgets.

Let me know if you find differences in sound or any other differences
in behavior.

Cheers,

Hi Andrès,

QuteCsound is quite stable and the only real problem I experimentes was the
latency...But it maybe due to Vista since I have no latency problem on my
laptop using XP Pro...I use the same ASIO drivers on both laptops...But by
tweaking the settings, I manage to have a good realtime rendering...
