To all the Csounders that represented at the Bohlen-Pierce Symposium tonight, I just want to say thank you! It was a pleasure to hear your amazing pieces and to be able to share the stage with such talented musicians.

Wish I could have been there with everyone. I'm looking forward to hearing any pieces that are released. I'll be putting up mine later today. Steven, I'll get a chance to listen to yours in about 2 hours.

Also, if anyone has any general comments about the Bohlen-Pierce Symposium, I'd love to hear how it's going/how it went.

Best,
Jake

I too woul; dbe interested in any reorts. I could make by contribution to
teh symposium available, but it is pne of the non-tonal pieces, and is
also in 4-channels -- so large files in WAV and many samples as .csd

Any chance you could bounce it to stereo?

I had a really great time at the conference! I could not attend
today's papers and concert as we have to drive back home today, so can
only comment on the first two days.

On the paper sessions, the first two presentations by Heinz Bohlen and
Max Matthews were a real joy. They were both done over Skype and both
told stories behind the scale which was great to hear from them. I
also found the whole video broadcast over skype pretty neat, as if we
were receiving some kind of broadcast from the future. :P

It was also really nice to hear Dr. B and Curtis Roads do
presentations on their works using the BP scale and get their
perspectives on that. Other papers I had heard ventured into a lot of
tuning theory and strategies with working with different tunings.
While those papers were relevant to using BP, I think they were more
about tunings in general and less focused on BP itself. For me I had
known a good bit of the information already from my own experiences in
studying up on tuning so I think I "tuned out" a little on those. :P I
think though that they were appropriate types of papers to have though
at a conference like this, but I think it would have been nicer if
they explained a little more how what they discussed directly
translated into bottom line for the composer which I think if you
weren't familiar with tuning theory it may have gotten lost.

The panel talk wasn't so much a panel but a roundtable amongst the
audience. The things that came up were that there isn't a standard for
the base frequency used for the scale (some instruments use or were
built based on middle C, while others like the BP Clarinets were built
based on A440). That of course was an interesting discovery as it
leads to incompatible frequencies. The other topic that was discussed
was trying to figure a standard method for notation. There was
agreement here as the topic of notating for the performer vs the
composer came up, so things like notation without accidentals vs.
Notating using standard notation so that clarinet players can play the
fingerings vs. Using ezra sims' notation for a more absolute style of
notation. It's a big topic and since I work strictly with computers I
didn't really feel strongly on the topic, but recognize it as a
difficult subject as it basically is trying to define how people will
talk to each other in BP.

The concerts were really nice with a very large variety of different
styles represented. The first night's concert was heavily acoustic
compositions while the second night's concerts were mostly electronic.
It was nice to hear all the ways people used the scale in their music!

So that's about all I can recollect now. I wished it would have worked
out to attend today's papers and concert. Hopefully someone else who
attends today's events can comment further.

There was mention that this was the first BP conference with the
implication that there would be more. I certainly hope there will be
more !

Thanks!
Steven
