We're currently looking at ordering some new PCs for one of our labs. Computer services are leaning towards OSX machines but the case may arrive where we will need to have dual boot on some systems to run win32 only software. My concern regards the sound cards. We're currently using M-Audio cards, and may upgrade to M-Boxes. My question is will these audio interfaces work across platforms? Has anyone any experience with this? I guess they are both USB devices so they should but I just wanted to make sure. Rory. I have never used these on windows but I have seen two cases where problems were caused as a result of upgrading the firmware on a mac (after which point the interfaces would not be recognised on a PC). One case was a friend of mine who lent his M-audio usb interface to a mac user. Another case was when I sold my M-box 2 to a windows user who wasn't able to get it working on the PC, he later decided to buy a mac and it worked fine. Having said that, I have a little M-audio transit which works fine on both (I only tried it once on a windows system). Maybe the problem only arises after upgrading the firmware, or it could be that the particular firmware I experienced with the M-box was bugy. I wouldn't be sure though. The best thing would be to call them up and explain the situation to them. Just tell them you're planing to by an interface and you want it to work on both systems, that way they put you through to the sales department, which is much more efficient. If you say you already have the interfaces then you're in for a long wait at the support centre! That's good to know Peiman. They were just the kind of issues I was concerned about. I'd really like to give our students the option of using either platform. Currently we have around an 80/20 split in favour of PCs and I wouldn't want to force any of their hands one way or the other. Rory. On 8 March 2010 17:16, Peiman Khosravi |

My experience with sales people is they will tell you anything you want to hear in order to move the unit! On the box it says drivers for OSX and Windows so I think we all know what they will say when asked.. On 8 March 2010 17:22, Peiman Khosravi |

Yes you are probably right :-) P On 8 Mar 2010, at 17:25, Rory Walsh wrote: > My experience with sales people is they will tell you anything you > want to hear in order to move the unit! I thought the M-boxes was not so ideal for all other tasks than running ProTools, at least this was the case with the very first models. I haven't actually had any hands on experience, but I have a "hunch" that it might not be perfect for running Csound with low latency in realtime. Anyone with practical experience in this combination please do chime in, I might be wrong. It's always an extra round of work when trying to find a new type of sound card, as you need to actively test it for your purposes and on your platform, there is no other way to be sure. best Oeyvind 2010/3/8 Rory Walsh |

You are right. That's partly why I sold mine. At university we have digi02 and 03 boxes and they suck too (except for running protools). I think it's all the digidesign drivers. And I think M-audio drivers are made by the same people aren't they? > It's always an extra round of work when trying to find a new type of > sound card, as you need to actively test it for your purposes and on > your platform, there is no other way to be sure. > > best > Oeyvind > > 2010/3/8 Rory Walsh |

Oh, I didn't know that (about the M-audio drivers). I thought some people on this list used M-audio interfaces nicely with Csound, but I also seem to recall that someone reported serious problems. Sorry for not being able to be more specific .... Oeyvind 2010/3/9 Peiman Khosravi |

I haven't myself had much negative experience with M-audio (I haven't used them that much) but I hear that their drivers are not great. From what I understand, M-Audio and Digidesign are both owned by Avid, which is why certain versions of ProTools will work with M-Audio interfaces, but beyond that I don't know that their drivers are written by the same people. Probably mainly the "dongle" part of the driver. I believe M-Audio is essentially a separate division. For what it's worth, I've used the MBox2 Pro live with Csound on OSX and haven't had problems. The only weird thing is that I can only get it to work with inch and outch, not ins and outs, even if nchnls = 2. I don't have this problem with my M-Audio Delta 66 (which I got pre-Avid) on XP. But that's not such a big deal. Well, now that I've figured that out, anyway. ;-) .mmb Peiman Khosravi wrote: > > On 9 Mar 2010, at 11:01, Oeyvind Brandtsegg wrote: > >> I thought the M-boxes was not so ideal for all other tasks than >> running ProTools, >> at least this was the case with the very first models.
