[Csnd] FOF synthesis, Score Notations

Subject[Csnd] FOF synthesis, Score Notations
Hello,

I was trying to find some information about how exactly FOF synthesis works, but it's either way too simple in explaining or way too complicated in a mathematical way (which freaks me out). I read the floss manual's granular synthesis page, but it just explains that the grains are used to create resonant peaks in formant frequencies. It also mentions that the bandwidth of the peaks are essentially a grain duration, but I don't understand how the grain duration can be related to the bandwidth of the peaks.

So I was wondering if there's any "easy enough to read, but goes in depth" article I could read about how the FOF synthesis works.

Also, I remember reading this page about different ways of writing scores including random values in score. But I couldn't find this page anywhere, so if anyone has the link for this, I would really appreciate it.

Thank you

In FOF synthesis, the frequency of a formant is defined by the frequency of the material within each grain, therefore increasing grain size will more clearly reveal its contents and thereby emphasise the formant frequency. You are right that the FLOSS manual chapter could benefit from some expansion on technical descriptions of synchronous granular synthesis.

If you haven't yet read Curtis Roads' 'Microsound', that would be my recommendation.

For information on creating random values in the score, perhaps this was something you read in the manual in the section on the standard numerical score. The tilde symbol will generate random values between two specified p-field values and works similarly to ramping. It's mentioned at the bottom of this page.

http://csound.com/docs/manual/ScoreRamping.html

It is worth considering generating score events with randomness and aleatoricism in the orchestra as this will offer much greater flexibility.

Hey Marvin,

Chapter 14 of Dr. B's Csound book is titled FOF and FOG Synthesis in Csound - written by Michael Clarke. Perhaps this is the chapter Victor is making reference to.
