This looks like a problem with soundcard/portaudio.
Try using the MME io module to see if the same happens, then
we'll know.

use  -+rtaudio=mme

Adding -+rtaudio=mme did not help; the behavior is exactly
the same.  (Although the csd did not render properly with
this option -- only static was audible.  But the hanging
behavior under discussion was unchanged.)

For reference: the hardware is a Dell Latitude D610
laptop, and the sound hardware is listed in Device
Manager as "SigmaTel C-Major Audio".  It is running
Windows XP Pro with all service packs and security
updates applied; however (I doubt this matters, but I
include it for completeness' sake) I have never allowed
Windows Update to upgrade Windows Media Player past
version 9.
