I suppose one doesn't _need_ fink, it's just how I managed it.  I was having difficulty with scons with the built-in python2.5 on leopard; for some reason or another it failed with peculiar errors... having fink furnish a version seemed to be without issue.

This was several weeks ago though; I don't really remember very well.  Your suggestion of simply installing python 2.4 was a much better one : )
