[Csnd] specfilt doc

| Subject | [Csnd] specfilt doc |
Hi all csounders,
this is my first post on this list (so please be nice )
I'm looking for documentation on the spectral opcode specfilt since
canonical reference doesn't seem very clear to me. For example, from
"
Syntax
wsig specfilt wsigin, ifhtim
Initialization
ifhtim -- half-time constant.
"
and the following explanation of ifhtim, I don't understand why the constant
have to be provided as a table, I don't know if the length of the table is
relevant and I don't understand the example ("wsig3 specfilt
wsig2, 2 ; absorb slowly") since table 2 is not displayed.
Actually, I'm trying to test Vercoe's instrument 2101 (beat tracker) from
chapter 21 of the Csound Book and the provided orc and sco doesn't work with
my csound 5.10 so if you have a working instrument, please let me know.
Thanks.

I don't think many people do use these opcodes anymore. For spectral
stuff the pvs family of opcodes are much more widely used these days.

Peiman

My idea is that the table covers the entire spectrum from 0 to
Nyquist. So the different positions along the table will determine
the various halftime values. The size of the table might just matter
if you want a precise curve of halftime values.

They still work though (but they're not designed for spectral
transformations). I like the spectral display with
w1 spectrum ain,.02,6,6
specdisp w1, .1

In the case of
instr 2101
asig in ; GET MICROPHONE INPUT
; FORM A SPECTRAL DATA TYPE
wsig1 spectrum asig, .01, 8, 12, 8, 0, 1, 0
wsig2 specscal wsig1, 1,2 ; FLETCHER-MUNSON SCALING
wsig3 specdiff wsig2 ; POSITIVE DIFFERENCE SPECTRUM
wsig4 specfilt wsig3, 5 ; INJECT INTO INTEGRATING
FILTERS
ksum4 specsum wsig4, 1
; GET TEMPO...
; kIN iPRD iMINDUR iMEMDUR iHP iTHRESH iHTIM
iXFDBAK iSTARTEMPO iFN iDISPRD

tempo ktempo, 60 ; ... AND CONTROL THE

out asig
endin
how would you translate specdiff with the pvs family of opcodes ?

Mhh actually that would be a little complicated and require a UDO or something. You would probably use pvsftw to write the spectral data to table and then compare it with another table taken from the previous frame. I have never tried this but I think one should be able to use the kflag output of pvsftw to count the frames and somehow delay a signal by just one frame. So here is the proof of concept. Actually it works nicely. This can also be used to pull frames out of the stream and do all sorts of Wishard-like spectro-granular processes. Best, Peiman |

Sounds like you've got a production-line for English-GRM-style music. On 15 May 2011, at 15:13, peiman khosravi wrote: > Here is an ad hoc example of pvs-based granular synthesis using > "beats.wav". > > |

Indeed :-) Have you seen the new version of GRM Tools? Looks like they've run out of ideas, hardly cutting edge stuff and just sounds like stodgy FFT soup. http://www.inagrm.com/grinder This stuff is already available for free in michael norris's AU plug-ins (for those that can't be bothered to use pvsblur) so I don't know why anyone would pay for it. p.s. I think it woul dbe cool to control the temporal density of the fft frames as well as the amount of energy in each frame. Not sure if it's possible but I'm looking into imposing a secondary envelope onto each frame. Will post whatever I come up with. However, I should clarify that some amazing music has come out of the
GRM: Bayle, Parmegiani, Zansi.
