Subject[Csnd] Studies on spectral composition...
Hello folks,

I was wondering if there are any resources, treatises, manuscripts, etc. that cover  spectral composition. I am looking for a something that covers extended acoustic as well as electro-acoustic technique.

Can anyone recommend some good resources?

Thanks,
Anthony

I am not sure, but some books like Le timbre, métaphore  pour la composition has been translated I assume. It gathers several foundational papers and you can get references out of it. Look at papers by Grisey, Murail....

All the writings of Murail have been translated into English and published as a collective. (I can't remember which journal.)

There are two issues of contemporary music review that are dedicated to spectral music (vol. 19).

Some of Jonathan Harvey's writings might be relevant.

Grisey's paper 'Tempus ex machina' is a good read.

I have lots of pdfs that I can send you off the list later today.

Best,

Hi,

Rozalie Hirs, Bob Gilmore: Contemporary Compositional Techniques and Open Music has long articles about Tristan Murails compositional techniques demontrated with Open Music:
http://www.ircam.fr/598.html

The examples can be reproduced with Open Music:
http://repmus.ircam.fr/openmusic/overview
And the OMTristan library:
http://repmus.ircam.fr/openmusic/libraries
Both are free, but the OM-pm2 library for spectral analysis will require a subscrition.

If you have access to jstor through a university, you will find many articles there:
http://www.jstor.org/

Best,
Ruben

Highly recommended. Notable works by Claude Vivier and Gerard Grisey are
also discussed.

IIRC the OM_SuperVP library is also needed. Note that while OM is a
32-bit system the SuperVP and Pm2 libs are 64-bit-only and require a
64-bit host system. It all works nicely here on Fedora 19 x86_64.

If you get into OM I'd also recommend The OM Composers Book, vols 1 and 2.

Look for Francois Rose's "Introduction to the Pitch Orgnization of
French Spectral Music". Its focus is mainly on Grisey's music but it's a
good general introduction.

Rick Taube included a very useful chapter on Spectral Composition in his
Notes From The Metalevel.

hi,

I tried to install OM for win7, but Avira blocked libsamplerate.dll
because (possible wrong alert) of file containing a trojan. Where to
get a clean libsamplerate?

tnx
