[Csnd] [OT] on the VLBI sound installation

Subject[Csnd] [OT] on the VLBI sound installation
A short video talk at TEDx Trondheim about the sound installation I
made for the Norwegian Mapping Authority:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aBEGnLtVk64

As many of you know it was made with Csound,
due to the the quite short time slot I had to cut some corners,
so Csound is not explicitly promoted,
but I hope it is of interest anyway.

Excellent - Thanks for sharing, Oeyvind.

Having recently been 'informed' by a selection committee colleague that 'no-one uses csound for sonification these days',
your post came at the right time for me as I was able to point out that he was correct only y if you live in an enclave created by your own prejudice,
and….
you don't need to deal with (large, dynamic, …)  databases
and … etc etc.

You could edit the YouTube text and mention csound perhaps?

ciao4now,

David

Out of interest - what selection committee? How recently qualifies as
"these days"? I used Csound extensively in my work on the LHCsound
project (2010/11) - the software I wrote and subsequently published here
(albeit in a considerably unfinished state) generates a Csound csd file:

http://people.bath.ac.uk/masrwd/lhcsoundresources.html

I will zing up this page soon as part of my general programme of
updating everything to HTML5, and will try to put my distinctly hackish
C++ wxWidgets code in enough order to publish without embarrassing
myself too much.

It is unfortunate that I have never been in a position to write any
research papers about it all - the project was only funded for some 6
months and could not run to supporting attendance at an international
conference. So this instance of the use of Csound is something of a
"best kept secret".

Suffice it to say, I think Csound is a superb tool for data
sonification; and, besides, not everyone can afford a Kyma system!

Hi Richard, all.

Discretion prevents me from mentioning the the selection committee details :-) Suffice it to say, there will not be a python+csound workshop at this year's ICAD conference in NYC. I did do one last year in Lodz, so perhaps next year in Graz will be possible.

There are many of us who regularly/exclusively use csound for (large multivariate data sets for) sonification - So, I hope you understood that my comment was ironic.

Thanks for the links - your software, the website, in fact the project as a whole looks fabulous - I'll experiment with your software this weekend and report any bugs.

ciao4now,

David

Thanks! It's the most "thrown together" software I have ever written,
best to package the reports into manageable installments...
