[Csnd] qutecsound, no audio??

Date2010-02-18 12:02

Subject[Csnd] qutecsound, no audio??
A student of mine is having problems with running QuteCsound on winXP.
It keeps telling him no real time audio device could be found. Here's
the error message:
*** PortAudio: error: No sound device is available
Failed to initialise real time audio output

This isn't the first time I've come across this problem. I know that
QuteCsound runs very well on OSX and Linux but I've been having quite
a lot of problems with it on windows.

Rory.

Subject[Csnd] Re: qutecsound, no audio??
Hi,

Unfortunately there are not as many windows testers (who report
back..) as the other platforms, so these reports are very welcome and
valuable.

Does it work if he runs in an external terminal? What happens if he
tries to use the winmm rt module?

Since QuteCsound uses Csound directly for audio output and does
nothing (or should do nothing...) with it, it might be a problem with
Csound itself (or portaudio, or the portaudio module, etc).

The way to know if the problem is Csound or QuteCsound is to run from
QuteCsound but on the external terminal (the run in term button
instead of the run button). If it works fine in the terminal, it's
QuteCsound's problem, if you have the same behavior in the terminal,
it's a problem with Csound.

Cheers,
Andrés

Sorry Andres, I should have said but Csound runs fine from the
terminal. I also made sure that OPCDEDIR was set in the settings
panel. Any other ideas?

Hi,

What are the available devices on the audio menu chooser in the
configuration options? What is it set to?

Is any other windows user experiencing this?

Cheers,
Andrés

As far as I remember there was two options, none and the default sound
card device, sigma tel or something like that, which . As you pointed
out in your previous post, QuteCsound uses Csound for audio IO so I'm
very baffled by this error. I tried it with minmm and portaudio and
prett much all the others two. I also tried using QuteCsound IO but
still the same problem. For what it's worth I'm not having the same
problem on my windows machine! The only crashes I get all seem to be
related to running widgets. This one however is a real humdinger...

Yes very odd indeed, I'll continue investigating.

Also, have you managed to isolate the causes of the crashes? It would
be very helpful...

What version of QuteCsound are you using?

The crashes for me seem to be very erratic. I only really use the
widgets in class which means I have very limited time to investigate
if I do get a crash. I'll try harder in the future to isolate the
causes. I forgot to say that I rolled back the installation to 4.5 but
still got the same error.
