Subject[Csnd] miniature Csound pieces for the conference
I'm wondering if we should have a call for some sort of [pure] Csound miniatures to be played at the conference. I for one would love the challenge.

And maybe even a prize to be voted by the audience!

i thought there was going to be a proper call for works (music and
articles)?

I'm sure there will be. But this could be a bit of fun on the side - maybe set up in some sort of 'listening room'.

Something like 1-3 min pieces all done inside one csd and using no recorded samples.

And how about a live coding showcase? Let's face it, when it comes to
live coding with Csound we're all beginners, but it could be fun. We
could have a 'native' and an 'interfaces' competition. Each candidate
gets 10 minutes each, and the best is voted by the audience!

hi peiman,

i get the need to limit the duration of submissions but, just out of curiosity, why make these other kinds of limitations on what would be permissible to submit?  some people don't like mixing in csound.  other like to use samples.  i can see how technical / programmatic restrictions can provide interesting creative fodder, but i would guess that the more you limit what people can submit, the fewer submissions you'll get.

i guess it depends on what you want the outcome to be. if you want a lot of submissions, fewer restrictions are better.

if it were up to me [it isn't], i'd do something like a hard limit of 1 minute and a theme: something like "quiet" or "geometry" or ...

Hi Ben,

I also do not mix in Csound. Not using samples, and mixing everything in one CSD is a huge challenge for me, I don't feel comfortable with it at all. I use Csound to generate the sounds (and use lots of samples) and then edit/mix extensively in Pro Tools. Of course, a general call for pieces is in order (I hope). But I thought this could be an interesting side project, to see how different composers would respond to the limitations.

Of course, it isn't up to me either :-)

Thanks
Peiman

I also like the idea of some conceptual direction (limitation).
The suggested duration is one sensible limit.
Another idea would be to give bonus points for compact code, the shorter the better (even though I myself would probably fail utterly in that respect it would be interesting to see what comes up). With the new syntax, some pretty compact and powerful things could come up.

SubjectRe: [Csnd] miniature Csound pieces for the conference
I very much appreciate all your suggestions, thoughts, and perspectives - about the concerts
and pieces, and themes, and limits, and...

The "official" call will happen soon.

I just started the summer semester here (I teach 7 classes) and also am teaching
a group of faculty and administrators Max/MSP/Jitter (and slipping in a little csound~).
Plus, csSpectral is almost done... I am finishing up the last of the documentation. And
I am writing a new course - Audio Programming for the iPad (featuring CsoundForIOS SDK
of course.)

So....

I am super excited and inspired by your ideas.
I can assure you that I have a great team here and wonderful support from the students,
my colleagues, my boss, and bosses boss... to help pull  things together and help them
run smoothly.

Please forgive the delays with locking things down. The Students, Staff, Faculty, Chairman, Dean,
and Conference Coordinator, were all away for the past 2 weeks.

Wishing you all the best,

-

Hello Dr. B.

Is there any chance you could video your courses regarding CSound, then selling that along with the notes? I for one would be very interested.

All the best,
